It's been six days since FanHouse last wrote about Brett Favre and, well, that just won't do. Last we heard, Favre may or may not have talked to Dr. James Andrews about arm surgery in preparation for one more NFL season. Either way, Favre hasn't come out and said he's done, although no one would believe him if he did. So we wait. Unlike last year, though, when a handful of teams were interested in Favre after he fake retired -- and it became clear the Packers weren't going to give him the job -- this time around, only the Vikings are in the running for the ole gunslinger's services.
But they're not going to wait around all summer. In fact, according to Sports Illustrated's Peter King, Minnesota would like to know one way or the other by the end of the week.
[Favre's] going to have a make a decision whether to join the Vikings very soon, probably by this weekend, because the Vikings want to know what their 2009 future is at quarterback. I'm told the organization won't wait for a decision much longer, and if he has to get a minor operation to snip the damaged right biceps tendon that has been giving him pain, he has to do it soon. Like, within a week.Yeah, that last bit about "reporting to training camp" and being involved "in the mental part of team activities" could be a deal-breaker. And I'm only half-kidding. Favre doesn't hide the fact that he could do without all the non-game-day-related stuff, and that includes watching film and partaking in mental reps.
I get the strong sense that if the Vikings are going to do any deal with Favre that coach Brad Childress wants to be assured that Favre will report to training camp in game shape, with no restrictions on throwing or his condition. They'd also like Favre to be involved in the mental part of team activities before camp. He has missed the first week of Organized Team Activities (last week), and he's all but out of this weekend's final mandatory full-squad mini-camp before training camp. Ten OTA practices remain for the Vikings -- June 2-5, June 8-11 and June 15-16.
At this stage in the proceedings, Favre feels he's pretty much seen it all, and a few extra hours staring at a video screen won't make much of a difference on Sundays.
Every "did he really just throw that pass into quadruple-coverage?" interception would be the obvious counterargument, but Favre, when he's playing well, is still one of the ten best quarterbacks in the league. The problem: the last time that happened was in 2007, and he didn't need surgery on his throwing arm.
Now, more than a year later, he looks like a 38-year-old, 18-year veteran. Which is to say: Favre might still be able to play in the NFL, but why should we think he'd be better than Sage Rosenfels? Especially if the Vikings' 2009 game plan borrows from the 2008 Ravens: use the running game to set up the passing game, and let the defense take care of the rest.
And if you're not convinced that Rosenfels can handle that responsibility, how about this: why is Favre a better option than Jeff Garcia? They're both in their late 30s, familiar with the West Coast Offense, and were similarly productive last season. The difference: one comes with a lot less baggage.

The two DTs (known by Vikes' fans as the Williams Wall) are out for the first four games of '09, right?
Some say Favre would give the Vikings the missing ingredient to win it all.
Is Minnesota "a good QB away from the Super Bowl" without these two guys for four games? There's a chance they come out 1-3.
How many teams playing the 4-3 can win without their two starting DTs? None I know of.
Maybe Minny should pass on Favre, use his cap money to pick off the best available DT from some 4-3 team that has an extra one... and give it a go with Jackson and Rosenfels. Favre would probably eat up $8 million of cap and that might buy a stop-gap DT... one always becomes available from somewhere during the course of training camp. Corey Simon comes to mind from a few years back. Maybe the Browns drop Shawn Rogers ?? Vikes need DTs more than QBs right now.... unless the court gives the Williams Wall one more reprieve ???

Listening to the latest Brett Favre development is rapidly approaching the agony of listening to the latest Billy Mays pitch. Stop it already! Does anyone outside of St. Paul or Green Bay actually care about this story? My guess is a resounding "NO"!

I wish he would ride off into the sunset. He was a great QB. But no more. I cannot believe the Vikings are really really interested in him.

Anyone who has doubts should have watched Jets vs. Patriots on NFL Network yesterday. If healthy, he'll be an upgrade. With one arm behind his back and blindfolded he would be an upgrade over Jackson and Rosenfels.
To all the Packer fans... how quickly you forget all he did. If anyone should feel betrayed it's Brett. The amount of hate spewed by GB fans is insane.
By the way, if anyone is tired of hearing about Favre, don't click on the story. Problem solved...

It really does not matter. Yes Favre would be a good fit because of his leadership and experience. With the Vikes having the best running game in the league Favre would only have to throw 12 to 15 passes a game and maybe 2 deep balls, the Jets wore him out last year. With the Vikes having the best RB duo, one of the best D's and a pro bowl O line they only need a QB to manage the game like Dilfer did in 2000 and big Ben did in his 1st superbowl. Ben's QB rating was horrible. They won with Bettis and a good D, which the Vikes have. After watching every game last year I can tell you what is hurting the Vikes more than anything is O cord. D. Bevell, his play calling is predictable and weak. Keep running Peterson and hope he breaks a tackle or a D player misses his gap. He needs more slants and crossing routes to keep the safeties back and get that extra man off the line. You don't need Montana or Elway back there, they can win with who they have if they manage the game and call better plays. Fire Bevell or let Childress take over the play calling, he was an O. cord.

Favre last won a championship twelve or thirteen years ago. The Vikes dont need to spend to much time or money on this. Brett needs for once to make up his mind and also realize his options are few and he would be damn lucky for a team to take him on.

If you remember the 06 draft the Vikings really wanted Kellen Clemmens. In the 2nd round we had 3 picks. #48, # 51, #64. At 48 we took Cedric Griffin and was going to take Clemmens at 51. The Jets swooped down and grabbed him so we took T-Jack. I am not a big fan of 1st round QBs, maybe 8 out of 10 make it. The gems are in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, sometimes higher. Everyone gets down on T-Jack, yes he sucked the first few games and was benched. When he came back he was on fire and ended up #2 among QBs for the year, when he came back off the bench he went 9 TDs, 2 int and 1056 yards QB rating 95.4 Remember, he has only played 17 games on a run first team. His stats are comparable to any of the top 10 QBs would be for a season on a team that favors the run. 3,442 yards passing, 20 TDs, 18 INTs {a little high but not bad for a rookie + tipped balls} 4 rushing TDs, QB rating 76.5 M. Ryans stats 3440 passing, 16 TDs, 11 INTs, 1 TD by run, QB rating 87.7......T-Jack who? Bill Cower commented on how good he thinks T-jack can be. yes, all QBs have bad games, look at McNabb the game after they Beat the Vikes. Why give up on him now? Give him a chance to grow, but he needs better play calling from Bevell.

Farve took no responsibility for his play with the Jets. The Teflon quarter back will do the same with Minn.
