In the latest sign that Brett Favre is planning to end his retirement and play in the NFL in 2009, a report out Monday says that he is set to have surgery this week to repair his injured throwing shoulder.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press is reporting that Favre will meet with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday and have surgery later in the week to repair a partially torn biceps tendon in his right shoulder. He would then rehab the shoulder for six to eight weeks, meaning a full recovery could be expected in time for the start of training camp.
Favre is an unrestricted free agent, so he can sign with any team, but while neither Favre nor the team has said so publicly, all indications are that if Favre does play in 2009, it will be with the Minnesota Vikings.
Of course, it's also very possible that Favre could change his mind about retirement, as he already has several times. But Favre wouldn't likely have this surgery if he didn't plan to play, and that means that his current mindset is that he wants to play in the NFL this season.
UPDATE: Will Favre have surgery? No one knows.

Brett, I'm a life long Packer fan and a season ticket holder. If you play with the Queens, you are dead to me.
I'm a Packer Fan first and a Farve Fan second(or maybe not anymore).

Please Packers: make up with Favre and take him back. I can't stand the thought of him coming to Minnesota with his yearly retirement soap opera. And we already have a QB who is perfectly capable of throwing interceptions: we don't need Favre to take him under his wing on that.

I'm sure Favre really cares what you think! Why are there morons like you that think they know what is best for Favre? If teams are interested in signing him, the man should be able to play until he is 80 if he so desires.

This will be the nail in the coffin Packer Fans.
Brett who? ? ? ? I would think if that happens,
they should NOT retire his number "4" jersey.

You are a bunch of ungrateful morons. Brett has given his best week in and week out. It was Ted Thompson that wanted Brett out of Green Bay, not Brett. And if the Packers Defense was so good in 2007 why were they lousy in 2008. It was almost the exact same group of players. Brett took that team to 13-3 with hi leadership and example setting. Aaron Rodgers couldn't hold a candle to Brett Favre and they all know it!!!

The Packer's were the ones looking toward a future quarterback and influencing Farve to retire early. If Farve still has play in him why not play somewhere else - I mean he can't play for the Packer's - so, there is no betrayal here - the man still has some football in him - and if there was any disloyalty it was the Packer's on account of future business venture's - play on Farve. Most the country enjoyed the Packer's because of Farve not the Packer's - so, if Farve can play most of us are still interested in seeing how it works out. If Farve extends his legacy it only compliments the good quarterback that the Packer's had for so many years - if he can play let him still play where he can - if he can't play in Packer land then he can play somewhere else. In reality there is no problem with that.

At this point it seems extremely clear that Favre is ready to return as a Viking. I mean the facts are right there. So Packers fans, and some Jets fans can finally see that he is now mianly playing becasue of mainly ego I think. It's going to be a HUGE FOOTBALL GAME when he comes to Pack land.

As a long time Viking fan, the last thing this team needs is a QB at the end of his career. I'm still in therapy over the Vikings loss to the Falcons in the NFC Championship game. Favre can't help a team that is still deficient in so many areas. Stay home and watch the games, Brett.

Seems like you people forget the past 4 or 5 years when old Brett Baby wanted to be begged every year to return. He dangled the retirement BS for too long and it caught up to him. I hope he does come back so we can kick his azz up and down the field here and in Minn. Go Packers! Team first, individuals second.

You have your message all mixed up. Only ONCE did Brett Favre retire - that was following his 2007 season in Green Bay. The other "retirements" were conjured up by the media and some "know it alls", but not BRETT FAVRE. I would like you to show proof of prior retirements but posting them. You sound all "mouth" an will not be able to substantial your unfounded comments. Mine can be found by merely looking at his professional record where he has beaten nearly every statistic, including interceptions which, by the way is an NFL statistic. While I have been a Packer fan all my life, Brett does have a constitutional right to play football as long as he wants and where he wants. That's the AMERICAN WAY..

You Packer morons writing in! (Though there're probably a hell of a lot of Packers fans who are NOT morons--but they're not attacking Favre.) Did you throw rotten eggs at Jimmy McMahon when he came to you and backed up Favre, the season they won the Super Bowl? Friggin' hypocrites.
If Favre comes to us in Minnie and you "love to hate and hate to love" him--like we did for so many years--that's fine. But don't go turning on him like rabid dogs and forgetting that he won you the ONLY Super Bowl in AGES--yes, with a TEAM, but in no small part because the TEAM believed in him!
And if, contrary to what I'd like to believe, most of the state of Wisconsin is full of childish, petulant, drunken idiot-ingrates...then maybe Brett IS better off here in Minnesota.
Because if, like he did for you, he wins us one Lombardi, let me tell you what--one is all it'll take for us to be PROUD to retire him as a VIKING!!

Oh Gosh, please let him retire a Viking, with no championships, more int's than TD's. and never coming back to Wisconsin again. Please, please let that happen!!

So now he will be playing for the childish drunken idiot-ingrates in Minihaha. You can put a fork in Brett because he is done. If you honestly think that Brett is the missing piece needed for a Viking Superbowl Win, you are crazier than Brett. The Vikings need many more holes plugged to compete with the elite in the NFL. How about stopping the pass. The main reason the Vikings were rated so high in run Defense was because it was so easy to pass against them. If Brett does decide to play for the Vikings I will watch the games as I am a Brett fan. But I am also a Green Bay Packer Fan and would hope he would throw some of the Interceptions we all he he is going to throw in the games against the Pack.

Personally I can't stand the guy,but it's his life and his body. Who are we to decide. And, by the way the larger question is why anyone would want to spend time in Minnesota, the armpit of the universe?
