Report: Brett Favre Set for Surgery on Throwing Arm

In the latest sign that Brett Favre is planning to end his retirement and play in the NFL in 2009, a report out Monday says that he is set to have surgery this week to repair his injured throwing shoulder.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press is reporting that Favre will meet with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday and have surgery later in the week to repair a partially torn biceps tendon in his right shoulder. He would then rehab the shoulder for six to eight weeks, meaning a full recovery could be expected in time for the start of training camp.

Favre is an unrestricted free agent, so he can sign with any team, but while neither Favre nor the team has said so publicly, all indications are that if Favre does play in 2009, it will be with the Minnesota Vikings.

Of course, it's also very possible that Favre could change his mind about retirement, as he already has several times. But Favre wouldn't likely have this surgery if he didn't plan to play, and that means that his current mindset is that he wants to play in the NFL this season.

UPDATE: Will Favre have surgery? No one knows.
