The Brett Favre retirement saga, now consuming its second straight NFL off-season, basically exists for one reason: Favre is incapable of making up his mind about whether or not he wants to play football. So when Favre's agent told the local newspaper in Favre's Mississippi hometown that Favre is retired now but may not be next week, he was both saying nothing new and succinctly expressing the major reason we'll be talking about this for the next couple months.
Here's what agent Bus Cook told the Hattiesburg American:
"Have there been meetings (between Favre and the Vikings)? Are there any scheduled? To my knowledge, no," Cook said. "Right now, Brett's retired. He's out there cutting grass. ...So he's retired now, and next week he might say he wants to play again. So we really know nothing at all about whether Favre will play in 2009 because Favre knows nothing about whether he'll play in 2009.
I had heard he went and threw about ten balls to see how his arm felt, but I don't know if it's true or not. As far as I know, he's not working out with any trainers. ..."He may look up next week and say, 'I want a job,'" Cook said. "But as of right now, he's retired. That's it."
Cook previously told FanHouse's Calvin Watkins that he didn't know if Favre would change his mind. That makes Cook like Favre himself, and like all of us -- we simply have no idea whether Favre is going to decide to play or to stay retired. Get ready for a summer of speculation.

You don't need a calendar to determine what season it is. Brett Favre can take care of that. In the winter, Brett officially retires AGAIN. In the spring, Brett unretires AGAIN. In the summer, Brett finds a team (and trashes his former employers because they dared to move on without him)AGAIN. In the fall, he plays football AGAIN.It also works with holidays with Brett. For example, you'll know it's Thanksgiving because he hints at retiring again. Christmas is best defined not by Santa Claus, but by Brett hinting that he may or may not retire AGAIN. Mother's Day you will find Deanna Favre on ESPN talking how supportive Brett was during her very successful cancer battle. Finally, Father's Day will find Brett on ESPN talking how much he missses dear old dad so much that he decided to play a MNF game on ABC in tribute. Who needs a calendar to know what season or holiday it is, we have Brett Favre to tell us what time it is!

Who knows if Favre will play this year? If he does, what does this mean for your fantasy football team? Here are 5 things to consider for your drafts later this summer if Favre is indeed a Viking:

Why should anybody even care if he plays anymore. It's pretty obvious he's washed up anyway. If the Vikings fans think this guy is gonna lead them to a Super Bowl, they're delusional.

Brett's still "the man". I hope his arm is good and he comes back again. The arm was probably the biggest influence on his retirement - he played great last season before the arm - if the arm looks good - why not come back?? Certainly can't come back in 10 years from now - so do it while you can - "the man" is still one of the best quarterback's in the league. I never understood people encouraging Michael Jordan to retire either - just because he wasn't the top rated player in the league the last year - he was still probably in the top 10 or 20 - and Farve is still in the top 10 or maybe top 5 to 7 quarterbacks - and number 1 in leadership - GEEZ - ANY team that could use an upgrade at quarterback would benefit from Brett Farve.

bkind7x - you are right on.
As for Michael david Smith's alegations in this article, don't blame Favre. All the players in this decision - Brett, Bus, and the Vikings Management - know if they say anything now before a contract is signed, people like Michael David Smith, Bruce Ciskie and Ryan Wilson will twist every word of it to create more drama. And if they can't do that, they will make something up to creat drama. Let's face it, these guys have been doing that for the last four years!

Right On !!!!!
I totally agree with both of you. If Brett wants and can play, more power to him. But, my goodness, what on earth would the AOL writers write about, if not for speculation????
If his arm heals, he would definitely be an asset to the Vikings ;) (and hopefully, in my book, get a little revenge along the way, ;) )
Have a good day,

I've always been a Packers fan, and I love that Favre might come back especially for the Vikings. The Packers need things to change in the Administration area, specifically the GM category. A loss to the Vikings with Brett Favre at the QB position would hopefully seal that deal.
The talk about Brett before the injury, OMFG JETS SUPER BOWL CHAMPS, after injury, Brett has been sucking all year, what a bad decision for the Jets to sign him.
