Cleveland's Wide Receiver Plan B Moves Forward With Mike Furrey

In a perfect world, Cleveland would break its first offensive huddle next season, send Braylon Edwards to one side of the field, Donte Stallworth to the other, and both would catch everything thrown in his direction. But, as Browns fans can heartily attest, 'tis not a perfect world.

Bray Bray might get traded because he's got the dropsies, Stallworth is facing DUI manslaughter charges and the Browns' other returning receivers (led by Joshua Cribbs) are role players at best. So new head coach Eric Mangini is doing his best to fill the gaps -- the latest coming with the signing of former Lion Mike Furrey.

Furrey's entering his seventh year in the league, but 2006 was the only really productive year he's put together, as he thrived in the Motor City under offensive coordinator Mike Martz to the tune of 98 catches for nearly 1,100 yards. In his five other seasons, he has 100 catches for 1,042 yards.

Furrey is the fourth addition Cleveland has made at wideout this offseason. The Browns signed free agent David Patten earlier in the summer, then selected Ohio State's Brian Robiskie and Georgia's Mohammed Massaquoi in Round 2 of the NFL draft. Where Furrey fits in all that is probably similar to where he fit in with Detroit -- as a part-time slot contributor that goes to the bench if someone else steps up.
