From Detroit to Dallas, Minicamp Tidbits

The first day of minicamps are over for the day and we recap some highlights.

Vikings coach Brad Childress could have taken the easy way out Friday when asked about retired quarterback Brett Favre.

Instead he said, "We haven't (talked about Favre); it doesn't mean we won't ... We talk about everything, from what's going on in the United States today. We talk about everything, so yeah, I'm sure we'll talk about that."

Earlier in the day, Bus Cook, Favre's agent said his client was done playing. Also, top draft choice Percy Harvin missed the first day of rookie camp but he seems OK.

In Irving, Texas, Cowboys coach Wade Phillips stressed the 12 players drafted last week are not special teams players.

"These guys, most all of them, have been productive, all-conference players," Phillips said. "We've got sack leaders, we've got interceptions leaders, all those things. They were all football players who played special teams well. We had other guys in the draft that we did not draft who were good football players, but we didn't feel like they'd help us on special teams much. That was our priority. It wasn't the other way around."

In Philadelphia, quarterback Donovan McNabb didn't speak with the media and coach Andy Reid said his man was in good spirits.

The Eagles are trying to take care of McNabb financially by giving him an extension and adding some players who can improve the roster.

"He's in a very good place," Reid said of McNabb. "He was as upbeat and positive at the end of that practice as you expect him to be."

Reid said McNabb hasn't spoken to him about wanting a contract extension. However, cornerback Sheldon Brown, who wants out of Philly, did speak to Reid. The coach wouldn't elaborate on what that conversation was like.

Down in Charlotte, Julius Peppers was a no-show for minicamp. This is not a surprise because Peppers has told team officials he doesn't want to play for the Panthers anymore.

"It's a business," defensive tackle Damione Lewis said, according to The Associated Press.

Peppers' agent, Carl Carey, didn't return numerous phone calls seeking comment.

The problem with trading for Peppers, who is franchised, is that a team has to surrender a first-round pick. A hefty price.

In Allen Park, Mich., top pick Matthew Stafford made some sharp throws on the first day of rookie practice with the Lions.

"This is a fun game and you're supposed to have fun playing this game," Stafford said. "Winning obviously helps, but it's a kids game and we get to play and I like to have fun out there."

The Lions, of course, were 0-16 last season.

Good luck.
