Patriots Draft Brandon Tate for 2010

Under Bill Belichick, the Patriots have a history of trading up and down (mostly down) the draft board, accumulating future picks along the way. It's unorthodox but effective.

The 2009 NFL Draft has been no different. In fact, Belichick announced hours before the proceedings that the chances the Pats would trade into the top 10 were "less than zero." And he kept his word. New England worked the board, and didn't make their first selection until the second round. But UNC wide receiver Brandon Tate, taken in Round 3, could be the most memorable Patriots pick in this draft.

Midway through last season he was making his case as a potential first-round pick before he tore his ACL and missed the final two months. Then he tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine and his stock slipped. NFL Network Mike Mayock thinks the Patriots will redshirt Tate next year -- he'll spend next season on the PUP list and later injured reserve -- but could be an integral part of the offense in 2010. Assuming he stays out of trouble.

Tate spoke with reporters today and acknowledged his mistakes.
"I made a mistake and all that is behind me," he said. "I'm just moving forward and ready to go to the NFL and play for the Patriots." Tate said he figured the test would affect his draft status, "but I was still waiting on that call because I knew someone would give me a chance and I thank the Patriots for that. I'm going to come in and be willing to work for them."
Belichick has had some success with reclamation projects; Corey Dillion revived his career in New England after pouting his way out of Cincinnati, and Randy Moss actually starting trying when the Patriots saved him from Al Davis (for a fourth-round pick!).

Who knows what the future holds for Tate, but given New England's glut of draft picks, taking a flier on a potential game-changer makes a lot of sense.
