Report: Chiefs Trying to Trade Out of No. 3 Pick, Lions Aren't Interested

Last year, the Chiefs put together one of the most impressive two-day draft showings I can remember. Glenn Dorsey, Branden Albert, Brandon Flowers, and Jamaal Charles -- all taken in the first three rounds -- saw significant playing time as rookies, and fifth-round defensive back Brandon Carr started every game. (Worth pointing out: the Chiefs might try to move Dorsey.)

It wasn't enough to save Herman Edwards' job; after taking the Chiefs to the playoffs in 2006, he only managed six wins the last two seasons. But new general manager Scott Pioli and new head coach Todd Haley have plenty of young talent to rebuild the team, and in March, they traded for their franchise quarterback: former Patriots backup Matt Cassel who, according to NFL Network's Mike Lombardi, just signed a six-year, $36 million deal. Not Matthew Stafford money, but it'll keep him comfortable.

Kansas City currently has the third-overall pick in today's draft, and based on who's telling the story, the club could target LSU defensive tackle Tyson Jackson (a player the Patriots could also be interested in). But the Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher writes that the Chiefs are actively trying to trade down from No. 3.
I'm hearing they offered the Lions that pick plus a fourth-round choice in return for Detroit's other first-rounder (#20) and Detroit's second-rounder (#33).

The Lions rejected the offer. Too bad for the Chiefs. Since they don't have a second-round pick, this stands a chance of being a one-player draft for the Chiefs. And they need more than one player from this draft.
Yep, this ain't Matt Millen's Lions. You can't just pick up the phone, make some cockamamie offer and expect Millen to rubber stamp it.

Actually, I can't even imagine Millen agreeing to take the third pick off the Chiefs' hands. In addition to the $72 million they just forked over for Stafford, they'd also have to pay third-pick money. Which means Detroit could afford to have 25 guys on the roster next year.*

Kansas City's last best hope: Dan Snyder.
