Redskins, Rams Talking Trade for No. 2 Pick ... Unless They're Not

Redskins owner Dan Snyder wants to make it clear: he ain't trading the 2010 first-round pick for a chance to move up in this year's draft. That could mean Snyder doesn't think enough of Mark Sanchez to mortgage the franchise's future and get him. Or, more likely, the 'Skins won't part with their '10 first-rounder, but every other pick is on the table.

We'll know for sure in about six hours, but in the meantime, here's the latest: depending on who you believe, Washington is interested in addressing a legitimate need with the 13th selection. Or they're still trying to maneuver their way up the draft board to take Sanchez.

The Washington Post's Jason La Canfora wouldn't be surprised if the 'Skins target a defensive end after weeks of speculation that Snyder was obsessed with finding Jason Campbell's replacement (first Jay Cutler, and now Sanchez):
The Redskins have expressed renewed interest in the Florida State DE as the draft has approached, according to a league source, after not having much previous contact with the player. Brown, like Texas prospect Brian Orakpo, could be a hybrid end/linebacker and there is a good chance he could be on the board when the Skins make the 13th pick (assuming that's where they end up picking).
So there's that. But there's also this, via the Newark Star-Ledger's Dave Hutchinson:
Just heard from one of my guys and the latest word is that the Redskins are trying to get up to the No. 2 slot to take Sanchez but it's an uphill climb. Owner Daniel Snyder has said he's not going to give up a No. 1 in his 2010 draft and that's probably what it would take to get to the second spot in the batting order.
Michael David Smith thinks the Rams will target Jason Smith, and I'm down with that, too. Of course, if The Danny offers up enough -- even if it's not a '10 first-rounder -- St. Louis could conceivably be swayed. The Rams won five times in two years; they have plenty of needs, too.

As I write this, NFL Network's Steve Wyche tells me that Rams general manager Billy Devaney admits that "the phones are ringing" about the No. 2 pick. More likely: pre-draft bluster. St. Louis, after all, allegedly bought Mark Sanchez a plane ticket last night. One problem: why wouldn't the Rams just send the team plane to bring Sanchez to St. Louis? You know, if he was really their pick?
