Updates all over the place: It would appear Mr. Lombardi was premature with his call -- Peter King is reporting (via Twitter!!) that no deal is in place. And as PK noted earlier, he's in Kansas City, so this seems to be the more reliable report at the moment.Matt Cassel is, according to reports from Mike Lombardi on the NFL Network, suddenly an even richer man than he was when the Patriots franchised him and sent him to the Chiefs. That's because, reportedly, he has signed a six-year deal (with $36 million guaranteed!) that will ostensibly make him the face of the franchise for Kansas City.
The contract is, obviously, also a pretty big sign that Todd Haley and GM Scott Pioli truly believe that Cassel is legit. Of course not as (relatively) legit as Matthew Stafford, but, hey, he played at Georgia.
I kid, kind of -- Stafford is going to make more money than Cassel, which is a fantastic development for those of us who would like to see rookies make less money than they currently do.
Cassel's obviously slightly unproven; yes, he had a fantastic year last season, but he also had some decent weapons and a pretty solid system in New England. But Pioli was with the Patriots for the duration of Cassel's stay, so you would think that he knows more about the quarterback's potential than anyone else. It's probably worth noting, too, that the the Chiefs have yet to comment on this report.

Matt Cassel deserves anything and everything he gets. He came to USC has a highly heralded prep quarterback. He lost the starting job to Matt Leinart not by a mile, but by the fraction of an inch. He could gave ranted and raved and transferred to another school. Instead, he accepted his role with great poise and dignity, knowing he was better than a backup. He did the same thing with the Patriots. Well, now his it's turn, and I wish him every success in the world. He deserves it!

Looks like yourself and the league is starting to get a little drunk. Cassell might have been a good QB behind Matt Leniert and etc in college. But when he played in New England, he was surrounded by an amazing supporting cast. He had an amazing/genius coach, great WR's, solid O-line, and his Defense was pretty darn good. I guarantee you if my QB, Jason Campbell was put into the NE system, he would win. He is going to be a bust in Kansas City. And i dont think he deserves the money which he is possibley now getting.
