The picture above is me, a lifelong Lions fan, holding the jerseys of former Lions quarterbacks Joey Harrington and Charlie Batch. It's also a cautionary tale for the people thinking of buying Matthew Stafford jerseys, which are on sale now.

Yes, it's true that even though he hasn't even officially been drafted yet, you can buy Stafford jerseys on the Lions' official web site. But I've got some experience buying the jerseys of new Lions quarterbacks, and I'd caution against it.
These are, after all, the Detroit Lions that we're talking about. If history is any guide, the odds are pretty good that Stafford isn't going to pan out, that Lions fans will have their hearts broken, and that all those Stafford jerseys purchased this year will end up in the backs of closets throughout the Detroit area.
So while I don't mean to rain on the parade of all the Lions fans who are sure they've found their quarterback of the future, I'd strongly urge every fan who's thinking about buying a Stafford jersey to think twice. A few years from now, it may seem as stupid as spending money on jerseys reading "HARRINGTON" and "BATCH."

NFL teams should do some kind of jersey warranty program where a Lions fan can trade in his Harrington jersey for a Stafford jersey, or a Chargers fan can trade in his Leaf jersey for a Rivers jersey, or a Bears fan can trade in his Grossman jersey for a Cutler jersey, or whatever. It'd be a nice way to get the fans behind the new quarterback.
