The Perfect Draft: Dallas Cowboys

With the draft approaching, we ignore projections and identify the dream scenario for each team in a series we call The Perfect Draft.

To say the 2008 Dallas Cowboys season was tumultuous wouldn't really be giving credit to the word. The team had suspensions, Jessica Simpsons and the incredible absence of TD-ing. Dallas missed the playoffs after being a favored team going into the season and now has gone through a total redesign.

With Terrell Owens shipped to Buffalo, the passing game will go through Roy Williams, who has never been the player to take control of an offense. Balking on Ray Lewis and sticking with Tony Romo, this crew has a long way to go to be the best in their division, which is the toughest in the NFL. Along with all their obvious holes, the offensive line is a tad thin and the safety position could be improve drastically.

The Ideal Pick

Louis Delmas: The Cowboys need a safety as bad as any position, and in a draft that sees Dallas have to wait 53 spots to make their first pick, Delmas might just be the best safety on the board. The Western Michigan star can help out a depleted secondary that will see Gerald Sensabaugh and Ken Hamlin in the safety roles.

After Sensabaugh and Hamlin, the Cowboys are basically at zero, with Pat Wadkins, who only played eight games last season, and Courtney Brown, who has ten total tackles in his career with Dallas. The Cowboys were exposed deep last year towards the end of the regular season, and adding someone like Delmas, who's only real drawback is his over-aggressiveness, would pay off immediately for the Dallas defense.

If Delmas drops off the board before Jerry Jones has a chance to snag him, the Cowboys would have to go after Patrick Chung or Williams Moore.

Other Needs

The Cowboys added Keith Brooking to its linebacking crew, but Brooking is 33 and it wouldn't hurt to add some youth to a linebacking group that includes Demarcus Ware and Greg Ellis.

Another place Dallas might look to improve is their backup quarterback position. With the signing of Jon Kitna in the offseason, at least the Cowboys have an option with some starting experience if something happened to Romo, but there is no third option at QB and getting someone in the later rounds might allow Jones to fill that void without spending a ton of money (all of this hinges on the fact that the Cowboys aren't going to go after Michael Vick, which I'm nearly 100 percent sold they will).
