Torry Holt and the Jaguars, in theory, go together like proverbial spaghetti and meatball -- Holt is a free agent with plenty of skills remaining and the Jaguars are a team in desperate need of a wide receiver. And, according to Michael Wright at Florida Times-Union, the marriage is a done deal, as the Jaguars have signed Holt to a two-year contract.
Financial terms haven't been announced yet, but the gut reaction has to be: "value." Holt hung out in free agency for a while after the Rams cut him and it's probably safe to assume that this isn't a monster monetary deal.
It is a monster signing for the Jaguars, because heading into the 2009 Draft, they lacked "people who can catch the ball." Unless you think that Troy Williamson and Dennis Northcutt count as "viable starting wide receivers." (Hint: they do not!)
The immediate logic regarding the Jaguars draft pick this weekend is that they no longer are in desperate need of either a freefall by Jeremy Maclin or Michael Crabtree. However, as Wright noted in his report, the Jaguars shouldn't be counted on to not take a wideout -- it's still, even with Holt's addition, a huge area of need for the team.
What seems most likely is that they will attempt to trade out of the eighth spot and snag someone like Darrius Heyward-Bey later in the draft, provided an offensive lineman (like Eugene Monroe) doesn't drop out of the top five. Regardless, this is a tremendous signing for the Jaguars as they continue to address their weaknesses via veteran free agents.
