Sheldon Brown Demands Trade, Eagles Call Demand 'Unfortunate'

Sheldon Brown recently asked the Eagles for a new contract (and/or a re-worked deal). The Eagles denied that request and, reportedly, Brown demanded a trade on Monday afternoon. The Eagles have quickly responded.

And, um, frankly, this one of those situations, just a few days (hours according to some countdown clocks) before the NFL Draft that seems like a total nightmare for everyone involved.

The fine fellas at The 700 Level have the news from ESPN radio:

Sal Paolantonio, filling in for Mike Missanelli today on 950 ESPN, spoke directly to Sheldon Brown on the phone and said, "He flat out wants to be traded." He went on to add the Eagles have denied his request to seek a trade.

That was confirmed when Philadelphia issued a statement later Monday evening, confirming the Paolantonio's report (via PFT) and making a very strong statement towards Brown.

"It's very unfortunate and counterproductive that Sheldon has chosen to go public with his feelings about his situation.

[...]"Sheldon's comments under the circumstances actually serve to devalue him in a trade if we were willing to consider it; which we are not."

Well, that's certainly spicy, and it's not the full extent of the statement either: the Eagles made sure to point out that Brown signed a long-term extension of his rookie deal, citing things like "family financial security." They're right, of course, but NFL contracts are different beasts than those in other sports because of guaranteed money and the power that teams hold to cut players.

That being said, Brown certainly picked a convenient time to make a stink; the Eagles haven't been pegged as a team that would use a first round pick on a cornerback, and recently traded one of those picks for Jason Peters. Based on their statement above, it seems pretty unlikely that they would change their stance, but they still have to deal with Brown's situation one way or another, and if they're not willing to even talk money with him, their secondary is going to take a tremendous hit.

as a redskin fan, I'm loving this. The eagles are garbage and got swept by us last year, and will get swept by us and the giants this year. They might even get swept by the cowboys too!! haha

Where did Washington finish last year? I forget, did they make it to the playoffs? Who made it to NFC Championship? THE EAGLES.....Now, if you want to say the Eagles choked in the championship game, I can not argue that statement. But stop building up the Redskins when they cleary did not have a good year. I will take two losses to Redskins every year and get to NFC Champ game.

Alright, well let's start here. Your Redskins couldn't even beat my 49ers, although it was the last game of the season, still no excuses. I could care less of you guys "swept" the Eagles, they still ended up in the NFC Championship game, they've been there time and time again under the radar. To you guys joking the Eagles because they tied the Bengals, again the Eagles made it to the NFC Championship, so those opinions are mute. Anyhow you Redskins fans need to get a grip and a new owner, he doesn't even give his players a chance to mature, oh Jason Campbell has had 4 different offensive coordinators, no that has nothing to do with why he can't win......I've said this time and time again, show me a QB who's been under 4 different offensive coordinators and won? Not to many, you guys need to stop signing FA's for 100's of millions of dollars when they don't pan out. Man it's so funny that the only real fans I hear talking about Superbowl EVERY YEAR are Skins fans, you guys make me sick........

If he wants to go let him go, use the first round pick on a great safety and then second round get another DB and finish the other seven picks for back up runningbacks and maybe big tightend etc.... so what the eagles tied to the bengals. we made it to the playoffs and nfc championship but we lost. the cowboys were supposed to win the superbowl thats what they said in the beginning but got kilt by the eagles and my cardinals. also the redskins better get a quarterback if they plan on winning anything.
