Report: Jags Near Deal with Torry Holt

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen -- please raise red flags when I say, "GO!" -- former Rams wideout Torry Holt is close to signing a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. We should note that, according to our boy MortScoop, the deal isn't finalized. Of course it's not. That way when it doesn't get signed, Mort didn't actually make a mistake.

If Mort is correct, which we'll admit is possible, and the Jags complete the signing, this is a big move for them. The current receiving corps is Dennis Northcutt, Mike Walker, Troy Williamson, Nate Hughes and D'Juan Woods.

Even in the worst year of his career -- by far -- last season, Holt yawned to better numbers than those guys. In fact, if you combine their numbers, you'll find an almost identical line to Holt's. Check this out:

Holt: 64 catches, 796 yards, 3 touchdowns
Northcutt, Williamson, Walker, Hughes, Woods: 65 catches, 792 yards, 3 touchdowns.

So, yeah, the Jags can use the services of Torry Holt. Many scouts believe Holt has lost much of his ability, but he's only going to be 33 years old this season, and he's better than anything the Jags currently have, as illustrated above. I'm guessing David Garrard would welcome having old number 81 as an option.
