With the draft approaching, we ignore projections and identify the dream scenario for each team in a series we call The Perfect Draft. The Redskins made the biggest early splash this offseason, luring beastly defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth from Tennessee to anchor their defensive line. Their work, however, is not done. Unfortunately for Washington, it plays in arguably the best division in the NFL. Fortunately, the few holes the Redskins still have on their roster should be perfectly fixable. In fact, many could be done in-house, with younger players developing further.
The Ideal Pick
Regardless, he's much too talented a pass rusher for the Redskins to ignore if he falls all the way to 13. This selection would likely make the Redskins one of the NFL's top defenses in 2009.
Should Orakpo fall -- which is a long shot -- the Redskins would need to grab an offensive lineman in the third round, preferably a strong run-blocker. Houston's Sebastian Vollmer, Troy Kropog from Tulane and Gerald Cadogan of Penn State are some guys who should slot as mid-third-round picks and would be considered.
As for receiver, they will need to find someone with good hands who isn't scared to run underneath routes. They already have Santana Moss, Thomas and Chris Cooley. Antwaan Randle-El provides good organizational depth, but the Redskins need to find someone who can push Thomas on the outside and fulfill a slot-type position in the future. Unfortunately, they are looking at a fifth-rounder by this point. Perhaps Kenny McKinley (South Carolina) or Juaquin Iglesias (Oklahoma) would make it all the way there.
Should Washington land Orakpo, find a solid offensive tackle to develop, and a useful receiver, you'd have to call it the perfect draft.

I don't think WR is a need at all. They have Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly, and James Thrash as well. Thomas is hopefully going to have a good season, and Moss is already a great receiver, meaning they should do well on offense. All the pieces are there, but JC just needs to take advantage of the opportunity. I don't think that taking WR with our second pick is a very good idea.
DE and OT should be our primary concerns.

What I would love to see is, D.Snyder pull out his check once again and find a way to get Shaun Rogers from Cleveland just imagine...having two defensive tackles like Haynesworth and Rogers... not too many quarterbacks would be safe.

If you can't protect your QB then you can't score points against good to great defenses. The NFC East is chock full of good to great defenses. The skins already have a top 10 defense. Lets get something we need desperately, that would be a young stud O-lineman. I say take the best available O-lineman and he will pay dividends in an aging/failing pass protection scheme. Besides, Orakpo will not make it to 13 and I don't the Skins can afford to trade around to get him, unless he's the only talent they want to pick up in the draft.

Move Macintosh to middle linebacker?! lol thats the dumbest thing i ever heard of. he is pron to getting tic tac injuries at OLB and you think he can survive in the middle? i agree that the Redskins need a strong side linebacker to fill in for Washington. Orakpo is a good pass rusher and we can use him but i dont see Rocky filling in for Fletcher when he retires. with Haynesworth in the middle, Carter on the edge(who led the team in sacks) and with vets Griffen, Daniles, Wynn, i honestly dont think we need a dominate pass rusher. i say we go for Ray from USC who is also a good pass rusher and can start OLB this up coming season to get used to the speed of the game. when Fletcher retires, Ray can be the firery leader at the MLB postion, bc he is of the same firery breed as Ray Lewis. its always easier to find OLB after Ray moves to MLB, its damn near impossible to find a MLB like Ray. look at Macintosh he wasnt a first rounder but he get the job done. so the ideal pick should be Ray out of USC not Orakpo or a OT.

Orakpo would be good, but DE is more of a luxury pick. The necessity pick, the pick that needs to be perfect is OT. I'd say the perfect draft for the Skins would be Andre Smith. We need an immediate starter at RT, and hopefully someone to take over for Chris Samuels in a year or two, so passing over OT or drafting some lower ranked guys probably won't cut it. If we get Smith and he ends up as the second coming of Samuels, which he seems to think he can be, that's perfection.
As for WR, I really don't see why we'd consider one. Ideally, we could get Santana Moss as #1 on the outside, Devin Thomas as #2 on the outside, and Antwaan Randle El as #3 in the slot. Should Malcolm Kelly develop and not be injured, he can step in somewhere too.
We have 5 draft picks, so to me, a perfect draft would be Smith, and some kind of mix of one more OT, DE and OLB.
Oh and there's no way Rocky McIntosh is moving to the middle.

We need a "go to" wide receiver, in the mold of Art Monk. I view Santana Moss as a Gary Clark, Charlie Brown or Ricky Sanders type receiver. I am hopeful that either Devon Thomas or Malcolm Kelly will be that "go to" receiver. If neither Thomas nor Kelly step up to fulfill that role, then the offensive will sputter again this year.
We have enough role players to cover the defensive end position for this year. Daneils, Wynn, Buzbee and Wilson can be platooned at defensive end depending on the situation. But next year we will need a three down left defensive end.
What we really need this year is a quality starting strong side linebacker. Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing or Robert Ayers would be a good pick here.
Then we need to concentrate on the offensive line, especially the at tackle spot. If Jon Jansen and Stephon Heyer can stay healthy this year, we can use our 2nd or 3th pick to draft a tackle that can be developed into a full time starter.

The O-line question should have been answered last year. Vinny was an idiot for letting Andrew Crummy fall thru his finger tips last year. This guy was an NCAA Honerable Mention all-american on one leg in 2007, in six games. Vinny got him as an UDFA for about 10 bucks. The "Ben-girls" took him from the practice squad and he is projected to start this year and many more.
They also screwed up for not getting any field time for Reinhardt & Clark. Were they afraid that Jason would get sacked? Like he wasn't getting nailed as it was. They had the making of a pretty darn good young O-line Heyer, Clark, Reihardt, Samuels,& Crummy. But my cousin Vinny gave Crummy away. We could be thinking of other needs right now.

the offense needs to be consistant. It all starts with clinton portis, we need him to get 90-95yds every game, thougout the entire season. we need more than the 5-100yd games in a row. Cambell is the qb. nothing we can do about that. as far as the draft goes.. i agree with one of the usc linebackers. orakpo would be the dream pick. lets be realistic, he wont be available at the 13th pick. then we get an OL with the next pick or via free agency.

As much as I would drool over getting Orakpo, we really have no shot at getting him. While it would be nice to get a pass rushing d-end, O-Line and SS Linebacker are a bigger need. With the re-signings of Wynn and Daniels and the pick up of Fat Albert, our D-Line is actually in better shape than last year. We have promising young pass rushers in Chris Wilson and Rob Jackson. Strong side LB is a big hole right now. We can plug that hole with H.B. but he's a natural Mike LB. O-Line could wait another year, but look what happened last season. Our O-line got tired and we started losing.

eb1921,
actually portis had 5-120 yard games in a row, get it right, Only him and OJ have done that..Portis can only do but so much, HES NOT the issue big guy. It's the O-line. Portis is the man and he's the least of our offensive issues. lol this made me chuckle.

WR is nowhere near a need in this draft and way to go not mentioning malcom kelly in ur article when he is going to be a major part maybe a bigger part than thomas is this year
and it will be a wast of our first pick to take a OT. Samuels can still play and when healthy is arguably 1 of the best and has many years to play still & Heyer will be a solid starter this year playing on the right and has great potential to be a great OT says Bugel and is versitail enouph to play the left side when samuels does decide to leave. And with the years that samuels still has left to play their is still plenty of time to find his replacment.
The redskins should use their top pick on a DE or OSLB, orakpo will be the ideal pick but most likley wont happen so maybe a guy like cushing or Ray ,i also would love it if they draft everett brown,or trade back in the draft to pick up more picks and then pick up Micheal jonhson from GT with his pure pass rush ability he will be a nightmare playing either LB or DE with the DL the skins already have.
then the skins should use the rest of the picks for team depth mainly the o-line,which is the only segment that isent crowded with viable reliable backups every other position has enouph talent that wont end up hurting the team due to the great supporting cast thats already in place.
