Greg Paulus Visits Ann Arbor, May Transfer to Michigan for Football

Greg Paulus made headlines galore recently when it was rumored that the Green Bay Packers were interested in his football services. And now the four-year basketball player for the Duke Blue Devils is shocking folks again. It turns out that Paulus visited Ann Arbor with the possible intention of playing for the Michigan Wolverines football team.

Yes, that's correct. Michigan could suddenly find itself starting Greg Paulus at quarterback next year. But it might be more plausible than you think.

FoxSports.com reported Tuesday night that Paulus "watched Michigan practice Tuesday afternoon" and references head coach Rich Rodriguez' spread option as a viable system for Paulus to thrive in. Additionally, the Wolverines, who lost Steven Threet, lack a clear presence at the quarterback position, and could potentially benefit from the addition of Paulus in Ann Arbor.

There have been rumors for several years that the Duke point guard (who was benched midway through last season) was still the most talented quarterback in the ACC, with stories popping up in the News & Observer about Paulus' pickup game exploits.

Still, the question of Paulus' eligibility -- unless switching sports is a mere formality -- could arise. The NCAA Transfer Guide would grant him an exemption based on the fact that "he did not participate in [football] for the two years immediately" before transferring.

But at the same time, the Guide seems to state that "you may use this exemption if you ... did not practice beyond a 14-day period or play in intercollegiate sports for two years before you practice or play for the new school ..." which would seemingly disqualify Paulus.

However, the NCAA rules are ambiguous on all fronts -- and this is, bear in mind, simply a guide for students, not the actual rulebook -- and it seems unlikely that Paulus hasn't discussed his many options with a representative already. Which means there might be a decent chance we all get the joy of seeing more Greg Paulus turnovers in 2009.
