The draft has become one of the biggest events of the year for NFL fans. Maybe because everybody's a winner on draft day, or maybe because hope springs eternal and all that. Whatever the reason, we're fully trying to horn in on the action. Round 5 of the FanHouse mock draft follows. And we'd like to stress "mock."
- 1. Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
They need a quarterback and they can't afford to wait anymore. (Previously: Aaron Curry)
-- Bruce Ciskie - 2. Rams: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
Orlando Pace is out and Alex Barron is just a stopgap at left tackle. (Previously: Jason Smith)
-- Matt Snyder - 3. Chiefs: Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
He's the safest pick in the draft and the Chiefs' defense could use the boost. (Previously: Michael Crabtree)
-- Shane Bacon - 4. Seahawks: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
Same as it ever was. Because the Talking Heads never get old. (Previously: Eugene Monroe)
-- Will Brinson - 5. Browns: Brian Orakpo, DE/LB, Texas
Kamerion Wimbley desperately needs the help. (Previously: Brian Orakpo)
-- SB - 6. Bengals: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
Because who knows what'll happen with Señor Ocho Cinco. (Previously: B.J. Raji)
-- BC - 7. Raiders: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
Al Davis likes big, speedy wideouts, and Maclin's actually faster than Crabtree. (Previously: Jeremy Maclin)
-- Adam Gretz - 8. Jaguars: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
After not making the first few versions of the FH mock draft, Sanchez is now a top-10 pick. David Garrard is understandably confused. (Previously: Darrius Heyward-Bey)
-- WB - 9. Packers: Everette Brown, DE, Florida St.
Whoever's name Roger Goodell calls here, he'll be a defender, and most likely a lineman. (Previously: Aaron Maybin)
-- BC - 10. 49ers: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
Marvel Smith is a stopgap signing. And when you have a chance to draft a top-flight left tackle, you do it. (Previously: Andre Smith)
-- AG - 11. Bills: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
It's a recurring theme: as we wrote in Mock Draft 2.0-4.0 -- different guy, same story: Schobel's not getting any younger. (Previously: Everette Brown)
-- WB - 12. Broncos: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
Thanks, SI.com and NFLDraftBible.com! (Previously: Matthew Stafford)
-- Josh Alper - 13. Redskins: Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss
Jon Jansen vows to keep his job, but age and injuries are conspiring against him. (Previously: Michael Oher)
-- MS - 14. Saints: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio St.
In case it's not clear: New Orleans needs secondary help. (Previously: Malcolm Jenkins)
-- Tom Mantzouranis - 15. Texans: Clay Matthews, LB, USC
Whether Matthews or Brian Cushing, it looks like the Texans are taking a linebacker. (Previously: Clay Matthews)
-- Stephanie Stradley
- 16. Chargers: Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn St.
You can never have too many pass rushers. (Previously: Tyson Jackson)
-- WB - 17. Jets: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
The Jets could look for a quarterback here, but whoever is under center will need somebody to throw to. (Previously: Hakeem Nicks)
-- JA - 18. Broncos: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State
Because there's only so much a glorious neckbeard can accomplish.. (Previously: Bears' pick)
-- JA - 19. Buccaneers: Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi
Getting pressure in the backfield was a problem last season and Jerry would help anchor the middle of the defense. (Previously: Peria Jerry)
-- AG - 20. Lions: Brian Cushing, LB, USC
Ernie Sims could use the help. (Previously: Mark Sanchez)
-- BC - 21. Eagles: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma St.
L.J. Smith wasn't re-signed and while Brent Celek was a pleasant surprise, Pettigrew is the best tight end in the draft. (Previously: Brandon Pettigrew)
-- Ryan Wilson - 22. Vikings: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
Harvin can play just about anywhere, and he's also willing to return kicks and punts. (Previously: Hakeem Nicks)
-- RW - 23. Patriots: Larry English, LB, Northern Illinois
New England used free agency to add depth at cornerback and it will use the draft to replace Mike Vrabel. (Previously: Larry English)
-- AG - 24. Falcons: Robert Ayers, DE, Tennessee
Jamal Anderson has been, to put it nicely, a disappointment. Maybe adding another pass-rushing end will help him break through. (Previously: Robert Ayers)
-- RW - 25. Dolphins: Darius Butler, CB, UConn
Miami would love to get a wideout here, they also lost some of their secondary to free agency. (Previously: Brian Cushing)
-- AG - 26. Ravens: Rey Maualuga, LB, USC
Like Miami, Baltimore could use a big-play wide receiver, but Maualuga can be groomed to replace Ray Lewis. (Previously: Rey Maualuga)
-- SB - 27. Colts: Evander Hood, DT, Missouri
Hood fills an obvious need along the defensive line. (Previously: Evander Hood)
-- MS - 28. Eagles: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
Philly would consider the first round a success if it could land Pettigrew and Moreno. (Previously: Knowshon Moreno)
-- RW
- 29. Giants: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
With Plaxico Burress no longer with the team, the Giants could choose to draft a big down-the-field target for Eli Manning. (Previously: Kenny Britt)
-- BC - 30. Titans: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
With Darius Butler off the board, Smith makes sense here. (Previously: D.J. Moore)
-- RW - 31. Cardinals: Beanie Wells, RB, Ohio State
Because Edgerrin James wants out of Arizona. (Previously: Beanie Wells)
-- MS - 32. Steelers: Max Unger, C, Oregon
Both NFL Network's Mike Mayock and Steelers beat writer Jim Wexell like Unger more than Alex Mack. (Previously: Alphonso Smith)
-- RW

Sanchez is a top 10 pick alright, but not to the Jags.IF the Browns stay with Quinn, look for Broncos,Jets or Bucs to trade up to #8 and select their new QB.Most likely the Broncos.

The Lions would be making a big mistake by taking Stafford at #1. He had a alright college career, but he didnt win the heismen, wasnt even the best Qb this year in college, had Colt Mcoy, or Sam Bradford, or Tibow came out they would all be rated higher so how can u justify taking him #1 now. he might be the best Qb in the draft but is by far not the best over-all talent. Safe picks are Arron Curry, or a linemen

I don't get why the Jags would take Sanchez. Garrard is fully capable, and with a good o-line could even be an elite QB as he showed in 2007. Last year, the Jags o-line was decimated by injury, and I don't think you can judge a QB in a situation like that. MJ-D didn't have a stellar year either, but I don't see anyone calling to replace him.
Also, I can't believe James Laurinaitis is out of the first round. He's got to be one of the most overlooked and underestimated players in this draft.

James Laurinaitis is a joke at best. Outside of Malcolm Jenkins anybody would be crazy to take any of the underacheiving Buckeyes in the 1st round. This is just shaping up to be a disappointing draft from a performance standpoint. There is really no one player that you can point to and say that they will be great.

i disagree with pick #13 for the Redskins. even though Jensen is getting old they still have Heyer who beat him out at the beginning of the season then got hurt pretty seriously. Heyer has proven he can get the job done at both left and right tackel and he should be next in line to start. i see Heyer taking Jensens spot in the future. so if the Skins are going to draft Oher to replace Jensen, whos going to play left tackel? i know Oher played LT in college but i dont see him taking Samules job anytime soon. so he is going to have to wait his turn for a cuple of years until someone retires and then he is going to have to fight Heyer for the job. Oher doesnt get good bush off the line, so that will hurt Portis and the running game especially with the DEs in the NFC East. with the signing of Wynn and resigning of Daniels it looks like there going to leave the DE position to the verts, so the team needs a linebacker. Blades and Macintosh are still young and still arent conditioned for a full season and Fletcher, even though age hasnt caught up to him yet, is coming to the end of his career. i would say the better pick for the Skins is Ray Maualuga who i believe was on mock draft 3.0. he can contribute right away. he is a beast who can rotate in with Blades, Macintosh and even Fletcher to help everyone stay fresh through out the game. then when Fletcher retires Ray can fill the MLB position. that would the better move in my opinion.

I think the Eagles are gonna trade one of their 2 1st round picks for Peters, the LT for the Bills, most likely #28 and a later pick.
With #21, they'll pick a DE that can pass rush (the No. Illinois guy), a guard/center (Alex Mack?), or a versatile back (Moreno or Brown from Uconn).
Maybe corner too.

The Vikings need to trade for a new Head Coach, and maybe a new owner too. Somebody who isn't satisfied with one-and-done.

Steelers need to get best offensive lineman available with both their first 2 picks, then concentrate on their secondary and defensive line with their later picks. I bet they end up picking a guard with their first pick because I believe both Unger and Mack may be gone by the time they pick.
