Jeff Garcia Signs With Oakland

Considering the large number of teams around the NFL in need of a quarterback, it's not surprising that Jeff Garcia found himself a job. It's just surprising he couldn't find a better one than Oakland. The Associated Press is reporting that Garcia, an 11-year veteran, has agreed to a deal with the Raiders, according to team executive John Herrera.

Garcia started his NFL career across the bay as a member of the San Francisco 49ers and spent five seasons there before moving on to Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay.

The two sides started working on the deal on Sunday, while Garcia is likely to serve as the backup to third-year quarterback, and former No. 1 overall pick, JaMarcus Russell. Sunday's Press Democrat cited an anonymous source as saying, "they've got their quarterback (in Russell), but he'll bring something to that team in terms of attitude, working, being on top of things."

Garcia is coming off a two-year stint with Tampa Bay where the Buccaneers posted a 13-8 record with him in the lineup, while he completed over 63 perfect of his passes with a passer rating well over 90. Going back over the past three seasons, Garcia has thrown 35 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions. So, why, again could he not find a team willing to offer him a guaranteed starting job? Or at least the opportunity to compete for one? The biggest knock against him is probably his age -- he's 39 -- but he can obviously still play.

Having said that, it's a fine addition for the Raiders, as Garcia gives them a fantastic option off the bench.
