Despite what MIchael Vick told a judge in bankruptcy court last week, there's no way he plays another "10 to 12 years" in the NFL. In fact, there's a chance he never plays again if commissioner Roger Goodell chooses not to reinstate him. That decision won't come till summer, but if Vick, who is nearing the end of a 23-month prison sentence in connection with dog-fighting, is allowed to return to the league, he'll almost certainly have suitors. And the Oakland Tribune's Jerry McDonald thinks that, under the right circumstances, he could be a good fit for the Raiders.
This isn't the first time I've heard this suggestion; last November, the Tribune's Monte Poole put forth the idea. And I promptly skewered him for it. Maybe time and the realization that Vick -- not yet 30 -- should be afforded the opportunity to right past wrongs have caused me to soften my stance.
Or maybe it's something much less philosophical: McDonald, in making his case, leads with this sobering reminder: "Unless you're comfortable with the idea of Bruce Gradkowski and Andrew Walter battling it out on the depth chart behind JaMarcus Russell, the Raiders should pursue Vick..."
McDonald immediately qualifies the circumstances under which Vick could work in Oakland, but by that point it's too late; you're already thinking about how an inept Raiders offense could become even more so if, God forbid, Russell suffered an injury. And maybe that's why the front office is currently negotiating with Jeff Garcia.
Whether Garcia is signed doesn't change Vick's potential role with the team, at least as McDonald explains it.
1: That Vick agrees to a one- or two-year contract at a salary near the NFL minimum.I don't disagree with any of this, although I wonder if there will be sufficient competition for Vick's services that precludes a team from landing him on the cheap. That aside, Vick's NFL future -- assuming it exists -- will have to be as an Antwaan Randle El or Devin Hester type; the only way he'll consistently line up under center is if the starter (and maybe the backup) are injured, or if he's running the scout team. But as the Wildcat grows in popularity -- and until some clever defensive coach devises a scheme to render it ineffective -- Vick will have value.
2: That Vick understands he has no chance to be the starting quarterback in 2009 unless Russell is injured.
3: That Vick is agreeable to being used creatively on offense in any way the offensive braintrust of Tom Cable, Ted Tollner and Paul Hackett sees fit.
Ultimately, though, his future rests with Goodell. If the NFL commissioner who has taken a hard line on player misconduct in the past -- and has worked feverishly to avoid any negative press (with varying degrees of success, it should be noted) -- decides to give Vick another chance to earn millions, there will be a public outcry.
But as McDonald writes, "As sick and disgusting as Vick's dogfighting enterprise was, he has served 23 months in prison. If Leonard Little can play in the NFL and Pacman Jones can get repeated chances, it's hard to make a case for keeping out Vick."
It's a fair point (Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin sounded a similar tone), although the brutality of Vick's crimes will make it hard for most people to get past them. Most people without something to gain, anyway.

Well, the Raiders *do* have the reputation of being a "safe" team for criminals.
Even so, I hope he doesn't go to the Raiders, because that could be an obstacle to the Chargers.

The Raiders have a crowded enough situation in their backfield already, don't they? As long as Darren McFadden, Michael Bush and Justin Fargas remain the committee at RB, I think Oakland has enough guys who can run with the ball.
Their more severe problems are at defending, blocking, passing and catching.
Their strength is at kicker/punter and at running back. Everywhere else, including at CB and at LB where they do have a good player or two, is still below what they'd need to be good

Intriguing article - but I think if Vick went to the Raiders he would have a good chance at becoming the starting QB - not sure how good Russel is - but don't forget how good Vick was - he wasn't the "Michael Jordan" we all expected, but that didn't mean he wasn't in the top 4-7 QB's in the league. (also in an offense that wasn't catered to his style for most his tenure)

Of course Vick does possess the same A+ type fi-nesse we enjoyed when watching Jordan play basketball. Jordan wasn't the Jordan we so highly esteemed until he won his first championship, and more. Vick has yet to reach his peak as a player - and is definitely Jordanesque to watch - maybe not in achievement, but as an entertaining player he is Jordanesque, and he is also an effective player who makes life difficult on a defensive scheme, and can get quick points on the board.

Jordanesque...are you CRAZY?!?
Jordan = complete player
Vick = running back who can (occasionally) throw.
That Michael Vick's career accuracy is only 4% higher than Jordan's career field goal percentage goes a long way in telling how AWFUL an NFL QB Michael Vick was.
Vick peaked as a QB his second year in the league and has a career QB rating of 75.
A more appropriate comparison for Michael Vick is Kordell Stewart, who was about as good an NFL QB as Luc Longley, Jordan's teammate, was an NBA center

True - Jordan = Complete player, and so does Kobe Bryant, but what made Jordan - Jordanesque was his style. Vick is also entertaining and fun to watch - in a very unique way. Don't forget that Vick can throw the ball further than anyone in the league, and his rookie reciever's did drop alot of passes. Vick never had a great offensive line - I would like to see him get on a team with a descent offensive line and good receivers.

Better comparison - Michael Vick is like a high speed Barry Sanders at quarterback, and he has similar passing skills to Warren Moon - I'd say that's a pretty good combination.

I also can't believe that anyone would compare Vicks' qb skills to Warren Moon's. NO COMPARISION. Vick is an Oakland kind of guy....and Al Davis is a bad enough owner to go for Vick.

Sure the raiders should think about Vick as maybe a ball holder. Vick was never nor he could ever be an effective QB in the NFL>

To be more accurate - the specific skill in comparison - is how far Warren Moon and Michael Vick can throw the ball - they both can throw a longer distance than any QB out there. That's really helpful for opening up the field - with the combination of a run threat - pretty good thing - especially if Vick has a speedy receiver.

How good was Vick when he was playing ? Last season the Falcons were a playoff team without him. They might not have been one with him. Baggage aside Vick is capable of making the occasional flashy play but overall is very mediocre actually poor in many regards. If there's one team owner dumb enough to bring in a guy like Vick it's Al Davis. There's being a "rebel" then there's being stupid in recent years Davis has been more of the latter.

How can you not call a player who hits a high
percentage of his shots, is very active for a shooting guard in rebounds (6 per game) and driving the lane, AVERAGED OVER 2 STEALS per game, made an unbelievable amount of game winning shots, and made all of his teammates better not a complete player?
1. Moving right along, I guess that Kyle Boller and JaMarcus Russell deserve comparisons to Warren Moon because they can chuck the ball very far down the field. I think Kyle Boller has proven that a cannon arm will only get you so far, and does NOT earn you a Warren Moon comparison
2. If Michael Vick was comparable Barry Sanders, one of the top 3 RBs in NFL history, he would have been an RB from the get-go and only occasionally throw passes

Nobody's calling Kobe average - I actually think Kobe's the best player out there right now, and he is actually so good - he makes things look effortless. Vick did take Atlanta further than expected when he was there, the new quarterback happens to be good, the rookie receivers have matured, and the new coach is better as well - as the defense. Certain players have left strong athletic impressions such as: Deion Sanders, Barry Sanders, Randy Moss, Ed Reed, Michael Vick - there are other players that come to mind that fit in this category - but these are the first that come to mind - and T.O. for run after the catch. Kobe makes that list in Basketball too. Vick brings an emotion to the game that is intriguingly unusual, especially since he is an A-1 athlete who touches gets to touch the ball more often than in other positions on the field.

i think we all need to remember that he may not get to play ever again. i for one could care a less if he does. he had alot of things going for him, and he threw it away. maybe one of the only things he has ever completed in his life, his jail term!

Raiders got afraid and just signed Jeff Garcia instead. Vick will have to find another sucker to give him a contract. After all, he needs the money since he's bankrupted and yet, building a two million dollar home. The judge didn't buy his bogus contract for a documentary film. Darn, he may have to really show up and work at the construction site.
