Josh McDaniels held a press conference on Friday afternoon, and expressed no regrets about the way things went down with Jay Cutler. While he said he thought it could have worked out, it was his opinion that Cutler and agent Bus Cook didn't want to make the same commitment to moving forward. Once that became clear, the goal was to trade Cutler and not look back. McDaniels didn't go out of his way to slam Cutler while answering questions about how the relationship soured. He saved his biggest slam for a question about a downgrade in talent from Cutler to Kyle Orton.
"[Cutler is a] very talented player, but you're distinguished by making the playoffs and winning games."Cutler, of course, never made the playoffs with the Broncos and the team has gone 17-22 in games that he's started. Orton hasn't started a playoff game either, but the Bears were 21-12 in his starts between 2005 and 2008.
The difference in arm strength or athleticism doesn't seem to matter much to Denver's rookie coach. Whoever winds up starting -- and the coach said they'd consider drafting a quarterback -- will need to "do what we want him to do," McDaniels said. That criteria would have been hard for Cutler to fulfill, especially after things got off to such an ugly start with McDaniels.
Overall, McDaniels didn't give off the impression that he was going to miss Cutler one bit. In fact, he seemed like a guy who enjoyed having a blank slate to work with. That's a lot of confidence for someone who has been on the job for less than three months, but probably the right amount for a successful NFL head coach.

Sorry but, I'm giving the guy a shot. Its too early to judge. I understand Cutler is mad that he was lied to but, he needs to also understand that no one is untouchable. I mean he is 25! He has done nothing yet. The only thing McDaniels did wrong was lie but that's it. He has a right as a head coach to do what he wants and trade as he pleases. Jay could of very well picked up the phone and called them or he could of took a flight out to Denver.

I love how the Patriots are blamed for EVERYTHING. I assume they're somehow at fault for Plaxi getting cut from the Giants too?
So McDaniels worked for the Pats. It's not like the Patriots told him to act like a douchebag when he arrived in Denver. These boneheaded decisions, like it or not, are his alone.
I assume that if the Bears' D sucks this year, you'll be blaming the Lions because Marinelli worked there? Oh wait, that boneheaded logic is only applied to the Pats.

Life is good in Denver. Nice bit of fresh air for the city. Shanahan with his glare and abnormally bleached white teach are gone and now Cutler and his sleepy/stoned look too. Don't get me wrong, Shanahan was great, but like the other good/great coaches from the 90's and early part of this decade, it just didn't work anymore. We will see how McDaniels does...
I am actually excited to see what happens.

Well I don't believe Cutler but its done its over and we will see who comes out ahead in this game. While it may have been a shock to Cutler to be on the trade block it seems that that is the owners right and the owner also says that Cutler wasn't trying to get back in the fold.

hey nik this is what cutler has done thrown for over 8,000 yards in 2 years with no running game 45 touchdowns and when the defense actually showed up to play and held the other teams under 21 points cutler is 13-1. so he wasnt the problem in denver and lets not forget he made the pro bowl. what has mcdaniels done as a head coach nothing he was apart of spygate cheater is what he is and he just took the best quarterback the broncos have had in 10 years. So why dont you think before you talk.mcdaniels just took the broncos offense and made it alot worse ,it wasnt our offense that sucked being the second to last deffense over all made the team suck. the bears just got alot better watch the broncos fold well the pats wont have to worry about the broncos any time soon

How in the world can a young kid like McDaniels become a head coach in the NFL? He's already proven to be over his head.

This really is one of the smartest things McDaniels could have done. If his team doesn't succeed this year, it's because he's working with a rookie QB. Trading Cutler gave him at least an extra year, if not 2, to make Denver a winning team.

Maybe the 'POWER' went to his head to early,,,I mean,,,the guy hasn't won a game yet,,he has managed to lose a QB,,,have fnas dislike him,,and players not trust him,,,not a smart way to start a career as a head coach,,,and the guy he's replacing must be privately snickering as he continues to cash bhronco checks,,,Josh,,u messed up and didn't man up to it,,,I hope u last the season

who cares if mcdaniels last the season we r screwed anyway mcdaniels does not know tht a defense can win a game too so our defense should just basically screw mcdaniels and do whatever!

Cutler is a whiner, who doesn't play well with others. He may be the best thing Detroit has seen in years, but not everyone is sad he's leaving here. Good luck to Josh and Kyle, we're in the middle of rebuilding anyway.

I think McDaniels did what he had to. Team can have only one coach and Cutler and his ego would have devided the team. McDaniels believes in the total team concept and Cutler believes in the QB and everyone else. Bronco fans need to decide between having a well coached playoff contender or just a QB with big stats.
