David Garrard signed a monster contract with Jacksonville two years ago. The team (and Garrard specifically) was a tremendous disappointment in 2008, though, and now Jaguars fans are talking in corners, the words "Mark Sanchez" coming off lips in hushed whispers. But, according to an interview with Sirus' NFL station (via PFT), Garrard's not worried about the Jags drafting a quarterback to replace him. In fact, he's got inside sources that tell him the exact opposite is happening.
"I got a call a couple of days ago from a pretty close source, meaning a coach, saying, 'Please stop worrying about anything that you see on the TV because I haven't heard anything. Nobody around here has talked about anything, so don't lose any sleep over it,'" Garrard told Adam Schein and Solomon Wilcots.Fair enough on Garrard's part; the team does need a big-play wide receiver. Of course, Garrard also mentions that the Jaguars need someone that you give the ball to "five yards down the field and they turn it into 60." Which means that Garrard either really, really thinks highly of Percy Harvin or he's been playing too much Madden '09 lately after trading Maurice Jones-Drew and five first-round draft picks for Steve Smith, Santana Moss and Wes Welker.
"I see us having a big need for a receiver," Garrard said. "Of course, we don't really have very many on the roster right now, especially when you lose your top three guys. You would hope that they would go out and get somebody to come in and be able to make those plays for you."
But ridiculous trade scenarios in a fictional world aside, I actually tend to think Garrard is right one this one: the Jags put their proverbial eggs in a basket, and they have other needs, especially with a talented, albeit older quarterback who has already shown that he can be quite proficient. The first-round play isn't at quarterback at this stage; rather, it should involve trading down and grabbing Hakeem Nicks or Harvin.
