The Bears Show Interest in Jay Cutler

With the not-so-shocking news that the Broncos and Jay Cutler will be filing for their inevitable divorce, more than a handful of teams in the NFL will surely be trying to get their hands on the Pro Bowl signal-caller. Apparently, the Bears are among those who will be in hot pursuit.

I have been very critical of Bears' brass in the past, namely general manager Jerry Angelo and head coach Lovie Smith, when it comes to building an offense. They sure know their defense, but for every Matt Forte there is a Rex Grossman (he was a first-rounder, remember?) or Cedric Benson (fourth pick overall). Should they pull off a deal for Cutler, though, I'd gladly eat crow.

The Bears have publicly supported Kyle Orton as the starting quarterback, and he's not bad. Jay Cutler, however, is a franchise quarterback. Orton will never be more than the proverbial game manager. Those errant throws that elude an open Devin Hester downfield would become a thing of the past should Cutler suit up in the Windy City.

It's true there are other holes on the roster, and most of them are more urgent than the quarterback position. It's also true the Bears would have to pay quite the handsome price to land Cutler. Allowing these reasons to get in the way of landing a Pro Bowl quarterback would simply keep the Bears offense in neutral, though. There hasn't been a franchise quarterback in Chicago since the 1940s (Sid Luckman!), unless you want to consider Jim McMahon or Bobby Douglass as qualifiers.

Go get him, Jerry. And please don't let this be some sort of a sick April Fool's joke.
