'Ryan Moats Officer' Robert Powell Resigns From Dallas Police Force

Robert PowellTexans running back Ryan Moats and Dallas policeman Robert Powell made national headlines recently when Powell was caught on video stopping Moats for running a red light near a hospital in Dallas, then pulling his gun on Moats while refusing him entry into the hospital to visit his dying mother-in-law.

Powell, after being publicly lambasted, was reassigned to what can best be called the "Favra Shift," rocking out some heavy desk duty for the rest of his life until the public moves on to finger-wagging Donte Stallworth.

The news that Powell had been reassigned probably wasn't enough for some folks (myself included), even though he apologized. But those who were upset have now been appeased: Powell has resigned from the police force.

Frankly, this is what should have happened. Powell has had previous issues, ranging from a potentially racist public blog post some years ago to an incident with Zach Thomas' wife (coincidence, I'm sure!) leading up to this latest debacle, in which Moats was unable to see his mother-in-law in her final moments.

I'm all about second chances -- Lord knows I've been given plenty -- but in this case we're talking about a man who is in charge of upholding the law of the land/city/what-have-you, and judging from his history, there's simply no reason to think that he should be allowed that sort of power without exhibiting a reciprocal level of responsibility.
