There are certain relationships in sports that just cannot afford to be broken. Tops on the list is the bond between a coach and his quarterback. So when the world -- and, more importantly, Jay Cutler -- found out that new Broncos head man Josh McDaniels had tried to swing a deal for Matt Cassel, the situation in Denver was already beyond repair.Sure, McDaniels put forth a little effort to try and remedy the drama, reaching out via text message to Cutler and stating that the AWOL quarterback was still the team's No. 1 option. It was too late by then, the half-hearted reconciliation attempts unable to heal the wounds. And now Denver finds itself with no option left but to unload its Pro Bowl QB.
Cutler will come across as a bit of a brat in this situation, perhaps rightfully so. But this borders on a complete public-relations nightmare from McDaniels' perspective. The former New England offensive coordinator -- who helped bring Cassel to stardom last season, for the record -- is four months from game planning for Denver's first preseason contest, and he's already jumped in front of the crosshairs.
If you think otherwise, just wait until McDaniels declares either Chris Simms or Darrell Hackney, Denver's current backups, as his replacement starter. Or until the team goes out and signs Jeff Garcia and Byron Leftwich, then watches both guys fail to replicate Cutler's 2008 numbers.
"It's shocking," Denver linebacker Spencer Larsen told the Associated Press. "It didn't seem like (Cutler) was going anywhere. This is the worst-case scenario."
Not to judge Larsen too harshly, but those aren't the words of a guy with total confidence in McDaniels to fix this.
Go ahead and find flaws in Cutler if you want. His 18 interceptions in 2008 are an easy target, as are his battle with diabetes and whatever maturity issues this brouhaha has brought to light. Here's what I know: In two full seasons as Denver's starting quarterback, Cutler has not missed a game and has thrown for 8,000-plus yards and 45 touchdowns, often while trying to help the Broncos offense overcome their defensive shortcomings.
He's 25 years old, under contract for three more seasons and has the potential to be one of the top handful of quarterbacks in the league for a long time.
And McDaniels basically kicked him to the curb.
It's fair to hand some of the blame for this to Cutler, too -- plenty of people will argue that he should have sucked up his pride and come back to Denver after Cassel-mania died down. It's hard to poke holes in that argument, except to say that Cutler probably believes he's one of the better quarterbacks around, and his new coach's first act in office was to completely and totally disrespect him in favor of another player at his position.
Try as they might -- even though they didn't try very hard -- there was just no turning around for Cutler and McDaniels once McDaniels decided to get in on the Cassel discussion. It's a delicate balance that coaches and quarterbacks keep. Once the relationship goes sour, it's almost impossible to rescue it.
In this case, the relationship couldn't be saved because there was no relationship to begin with.

McDaniels is a dumb a**. You have the 29th worst defense in the NFL and all you want to do is F... with the QB. Real smart. This Bronco fan is glad Jay Cutler is leaving. I will be pulling for the Denver Patriots to loose every game this year. Shanahan must be laughing his a** off!

This is worst-case because everyone acted in the worst way they could. Cutler couldn't get past a bruised ego and acted like a petulant child.
McDaniels started it, and even in the last interviews he gave, he was saying things like 'I can't predict the future,' meaning the possibility that Cutler would be traded was still there. That was a really dumb thing for McDaniels to do.
And Bowen wouldn't put a stop to it. He should have sided with Cutler to keep him there, and if McDaniels got angry, that relationship is easier to fix. If not, teams with coach-ownership problems happen all the time, and they still win. Teams with QB-coach and ownership problems don't. Now they're left without a QB, a defense that may or may not work out, so I wouldn't be surprised if Denver only wins 3 or 4 games next year.

There's no way around the fact that Josh McDaniels made a terrible mess of his team quicker than any other newly-hired head coach ever has. The only thing that could have come close is if the picks Tampa traded for John Gruden turned into absolute studs for Oakland. However, we all know how that played out.
Cutler's a young player heading into his 4th year in the league. The ego? It's annoying and perhaps disrespectful to whoever he has to work with, but is it really a problem? Only if he complains about a coaching staff in the future that literally didn't do anything.
Sure, Cutler hasn't won a ton of games to date. But looking at his production compared to Peyton Manning's first few seasons in the league, Manning averaged 18 INTs/season until about his 8th year in the league.
You can say he's unaccomplished and not worth that much and naive for thinking he was "untradable", but somebody's going to be getting a QB whose output will be perennial pro-bowl style numbers

I'm confused. Isn't this all about winning? Cutler is 16-20 as a starter. He didn't have a bad defense in 2007. Mike Shanahan was a good coach. Sure, comparing his 18 INTs to Peyton Manning is convenient and throwing up his 45 TDs and 8,000 yards looks good, but does this mean that ALL QBs who win the Super Bowl in a given year must have top 5 stats? Cutler has a big arm and throws for a lot of yards. His completion percentage is average (16th in the NFL), which indicates he throws a lot of passes (I believe the second or third most in the league in 2008). Sort of like Alan Iverson averaging 30 ppg in the NBA because he takes 40 shots a game. Lots of stats, looks real good, but no ring. Let's see if Cutler ever gets one before we anoint him. Right now, he's a statistics wiz- losing record, lots of passes thrown, all that jazz. But he isn't a winner. Argue it's his defense, argue whatever you want. Doesn't change the facts. You can't rely on SOME facts- yards and TDs and stuff- and not ALL the facts. Just my opinion.

I don't want his cry-baby @$$ here in Washington, no way, no way at all!! The Washington media would tear this guy apart, they cover the Redskins more in depth than any media source in Colorado does with the Broncos. Just think of the constant questioning he would have to go through here in the DC area. I am taking Vinny's statement from a few weeks ago that the Redskins are happy with Jason Campbell and have no interest in Cutler, as proof that we actually have no interest in 'that' QB.

If my boss called me and I didn't call back, I'd be looking for work.
Cutler's 18 int's could easily be 36. He makes a lot of poor decisions and throws in to double and triple coverages, sometimes for a completion - he does have a great arm. But he's a hang-nail away from a 6 int game. And his attitude sux.
I would not take a chance on this locker room cancer. Like most bad guys, he'll bring the team down.

I would like to see Cutler reunited in Dallas with Shanahan. With JJ's money, Super Bowl all the way. And I am a Bronco fan. I cannot wait for McDaniels & his brokedick Patriot mentality to CRASH & BURN in Denver. I have had Bronco TIX since 1985 and anybody can have 'em. I refuse to support this organization anymore! Go Raiders! Win the AFC West!!!

Cutler is going to end up in Tampa. This would be the best fit for both teams Tampa could give a first rounder and a player that the broncos need. Tampa has alot of mediocre players that would fit with Denver. These mediocre players are better than any of Denvers starters anyway especially on defense.

I am a huge Broncos fan and this is the worst thing that could have happened after Shanahan was foolishly let go. I hope the owner is happy this has never happened in Denver before at least not to my knowledge. I hope they draft a QB or get one from a trade because honestly this is a mess. Now as far as Jays behavior. In the real world when you don't call your boss after being absent, thats called "a no call, no show" and you are fired.

I would like to ask some of you, let's say you find out that your new boss has just put an ad in the paper looking for someone to replace you. Would you be trying to kiss his butt so he would keep you or would you try to find a new job? All OB's are spoiled brats just look at the Packers last year.
