Seven-time Pro Bowl tackle Orlando Pace was in Chicago Monday, meeting with the Bears' front office. The 33-year-old was released a few weeks ago by the St. Louis Rams, the only franchise he's ever played for. Injuries have limited Pace's immense ability the last few years. He hasn't played a full slate since 2005, though he did suit up 14 times last season. The move would make sense for the Bears. They have a deficiency at this position. While there are four studly offensive tackles in the upcoming draft, it's very possible none of the four fall to the Bears. Signing Pace would give them an opportunity to sniff out a pass rusher or possession receiver in the first round.
Though he hasn't been himself for the past three seasons, Pace isn't too old to regain some of his form. He's likely never going to be an All-Pro again, but he still has the size and tools to be an above-average tackle, if he can stay healthy. Bookending Pace with last year's first-round draft pick, Chris Williams, would give the Bears solid replacements after losing both starting tackles from last season.
It's worth noting that Pace has a prior relationship with Bears head coach Lovie Smith, though they may not have actually been close. Smith was the defensive coordinator for three seasons in St. Louis while Pace was in his prime.

I am a little confused with this move. Kevin Shaffer can come in and start at RT, and we have Chris Williams at LT. Where does Pace fit in?
My guess is that we have Pace at LT, move Williams to RT and have Shaffer as a utility backup, or even a starter at guard.
And lets not forget Frank Omiyale. I think he's going to start at LG, since Josh Beekman isn't starting material yet.
That isn't likely going to happen, so I just don't see a reason to sign him other than for depth purposes.
If we do take him though, I don't think we're drafting an OL early in the draft.
I also heard that Ken Lucas visited the Bears today. Any truth to that?

You are definately right bears0492...I'll just add that having such an awesome veteran like Pace WILL absolutely improve the young tackles already on the roster. And if they need someone late in the season, ya can't go far in the playoffs without a healthy O-Line, who better to step up...He can still play better than most OTs! Go Bears!

Yeah, Lucas was there, too. Vasher should definitely be worried about job security.
I do think the best move for the Bears would be to sign Pace at LT and use Williams at RT. Then they wouldn't have to use a first-round draft pick on tackle again. There are other more glaring holes, if the Pace signing is made. Omiyale will provide depth at guard, and I don't think Shaffer is good enough to be an every week starter.
Thanks for the thoughts, though. Love talking Bears even in March.
