Progress: Brennan Will Get Chance to Back Up Campbell in '09

Filling in for an injured Jason Campbell, Todd Collins started the final three games of the 2007 regular season, winning all of them, and helped lead the Redskins to the playoffs. Even though he was in his mid-30s and a career backup, there were suddenly questions as to who the team's starter should be heading into '08.

Head coach Jim Zorn announced that it was Campbell's job to lose, and it turned out to be the right decision. Yes, Collins had excelled in Al Saunders' complicated offense (primarily because he had plenty of time to learn it while both were in Kansas City -- and it was also why the 'Skins originally signed him in 2006), but when Zorn replaced Joe Gibbs last year, he brought his version of the West Coast Offense with him to DC, rendering Collins obsolescent in the process.

I mention all this to point out that Collins, who's nearing the end of a solid 15-year NFL career, could face some competition for the backup job from fan favorite Colt Brennan.

Via the Washington Post's Jason La Canfora:
The rookie, inactive as the emergency third QB all of last season, flashed a few things in preseason and by August the cries from fans for him to unseat not only backup Todd Collins, but starter Jason Campbell as well, made for one of the summer's most interesting sideshows. To me, rushing Brennan in any manner made no sense then and still doesn't, but he will certainly get more time to show his stuff in preseason games this summer and could push Collins.
La Canfora's right -- Brennan wasn't ready to be the starter last season -- and that's still the case. Some fans disagree, but there's no way the Redskins are a better team with Campbell on the bench. In fact, La Canfora nails the bottom line:
Ultimately, when you look at Collins's contract, the Skins really bought themselves three years with which to figure out what Brennan's true upside can be and so, again, I believe there is no huge rush to throw the kid into the fire. They need him to be backup ready by 2010.
Which is why we'll no doubt hear people clamoring for Brennan to get the gig after an impressive fourth quarter showing in the first preseason game.

While we wait for that eventuality, Campbell wants you to know that he'd like to stay in Washington. I imagine he's pointing this out now because he'd like to get an extension sooner rather than later. Fair enough. But his comments undoubtedly come with the understanding that his long-term fate with the organization will be decided by his performance next season. Assuming, of course, Brennan doesn't win the job outright.*
