Terrell Owens No-Shows Bills' First Voluntary Workout

Terrell Owens recently signed with the Buffalo Bills. People questioned Buffalo's willingness to give the temperamental wideout an excessive amount of money, based on his previous, ahem, issues with other teams.

Those questions might seem pretty on-point in the early going too, as word out of Buffalo is that Owens has already skipped the team's first workout, albeit one that was voluntary.

The Buffalo News brought word of Owens' absence, and much like the rest of the city, treated the news as "obvious but not insulting," a state of mind in the city, at least regarding their new superstar, that seems a little baffling.

When something is voluntary, it's not required, of course. But the Bills -- and the city of Buffalo -- are treating Owens, pictured here attending an NBA game just four days ago, with such "kid gloves" throughout this whole process. Witness coach Dick Jauron's really polite statement that "his hope" was that Owens would show up and Trent Edwards' polite post-workout statement that doesn't even attempt to be direct about his displeasure with Owens absence. In other words, it's almost impossible to picture this whole experiment not turning out badly.

And while I understand that Owens, as a superstar, probably warrants some special treatment, it's just scary to see this situation unfolding much like the relationship between a friend and a promiscuous girl who is easily out of his league. Those things never end well, and while I don't want to cast judgment on Owens before the season even starts, it's also hard not to be concerned about how his time is going to shake out in Buffalo.
