There's good news and bad news for Jason Campbell. According to Vinny Cerrato, actor, radio personality and Redskins football executive, the team isn't actively trying to trade for Denver's Jay Cutler. Unfortunately, the organization has no plans to give Campbell, entering the last year of his rookie deal, a contract extension this offseason, either. That decision means that if Campbell flops in 2009, we could be entering the Colt Brennan era. (Or more likely, the Anybody-But-Colt era. No offense to Brennan, but, come on, he's not a guy you build a team around; he's an NFL backup. There are worse fates -- he could be a blogger, for example.)
Campbell appears unfazed by all this and is instead focusing on next season.
"I don't worry about that because I always have confidence in my ability," said Campbell, scheduled to be paid about $2.8 million in 2009. "I know what I can do to help this team win, especially with having the opportunity to be in this offense for my second year. I know what I can do, I know the things I've done and where I can go in this game. And that's exactly what Campbell should say -- publicly, at least. Whining about things beyond your control makes you look petty and selfish. So unless that's what you're going for, it's better to just put on a happy face for the cameras and let your agent quietly handle the financial discussions.
"I'm still a young quarterback, but I'm growing and improving. That's what you want to do. I always put team goals first, I'm always going care about that before anything individual. But as long as we win as a team, everybody will get what they deserve. That's what it's about."
In January, the Washington Post's Jason La Canfora wrote that he thought "the relationship could become contentious" if the 'Skins didn't make an effort to extend Campbell's contract, but two months later, that doesn't seem to be the case.
There's also this: Is Campbell the franchise's future? Jim Zorn is admittedly excited about working with his quarterback, but we've been down this road before: Campbell struggles, fans and media call for him to get benched. There's certainly nothing wrong with that -- particularly in light of the Redskins winning two of their final eight games last season -- it's just that if Campbell isn't the guy, who is?

There was no intention of giving Campbell an extension this year. All I've heard is that they'll wait until the end of this season for Campbell to show he can handle the team for the next number of years. It's how things should be done. Campbell still leaves doubts in nearly everyone's mind, from us fans to the FO to the coaches. Two years ago, he showed flashes of greatness, last year he was great for half a season, and this upcoming year, he should be great for the whole season. If not, he's done, and rightfully so.
Campbell knows he has something to prove, he knows the doubts about him, and he knows if he performs, he'll get paid. I also think he knows how the Redskins work by now, and he isn't (and doesn't appear to be) taking it personally that Danny and Vinny are sniffing around Cutler. Makes me more confident in Campbell as a leader that he's not whining about all these whispers like Cutler is.
This will be the second full season for the west coast offense and the third year for Campbell as a starter. If a QB shows he is the franchise QB, this is usually when it happens. I'm hoping that Campbell succeeds and we don't have to start with a new QB again.
Adam, everything you said is right on the money. My hopes are that he has a break out season and gets the contract he would deserve at the end of the season. It is my belief that he will be a franchise quarterback for the Redskins
With talk about QBs would we consider this idea, In a three way trade, offer Colt Brennan to Denver, Cutler to Detroit Calvin Johnson to the Red Skins, Plus Davin Thomas to Detroit to replace Johnson, Detroit draft pick to Red shins and ????? to Denver.
What do you think
Snyder is crafty. In an uncapped year and with loads of money, why commit when you can have the pick of the litter next year in an uncapped year. The Redskins will always field the best team money can buy.
nobody to pick from the free agent market next year.so the uncapped stuff, does us no dam good.how lucky are the redskins.
Who is this a**hat that if Campbell fails he wants anybody but Brennan. Obviously this clown doesn't watch any football. If you had bothered to watch any of the pre-season games in which Brennan played, you'd know that the kid has skills and will only get better under Zorn. As for Cutler, there is no whispering among the Redskins management - try reading the article first. Not to mention, Cutler is just an average QB. I don't care what the "stats" are, the kid is a whiney cry baby who pouts when he doesn't get his way. Not to mention, I've watched most of the Broncos games the past three years and he does the same stupid things that Campbell does. He doesn't look at all of his check downs, rushes the pass, and makes poor decisions. We already have a QB like that, we don't need another one!!!
First of all who said Colt (NCAA Record Holder) Brennan is not going to take us to the promise land a carrer back-up can be anyone with a bad injury and no mental and physical willness to win and Colt has those things Mark Rypien pulled it off and so Did Doug Willams with a bad back he's faster and stronger then both of them and the team that the Redskins seem to be building right now "will get it to the Super Bowl in the next to years" quote me on it!
I would personally like to see Cambell to do well in his final promised year as a Skin. I would also like to see Colt get some looks in the pre-season against the starting Defenses.. In my mind he resembles a younger, smarter, more crafty Brett Farve; not to mention far more accurate. Colt is one of the most accurate QB's I've seen in many years.
As a life long Redskins fan and someone who watches lots of football("honey are you watching football again?"), I must say that I see greatness in Jason Campbell. I don't know what it is exactly, but I know that when JC has a bad day I feel for him. With other QB's in the past I would be saying "bench that sorry so and so". I find myself(even through the bad games) wanting more of JC and wanting to see him succeed. Maybe its the fact that JC is not selfish and wants to be a good team player, which is apparent by his statement about his contract extension.
Hail To The Redskins and JC!
Colt Brennan will never start in Washington. Not that he cant play, just that we will draft a top qb down the road, or buy a proven one. Thats just how the skins. HAIL.
Here we go again. Look, Jason has been the starter for us for three years and in those three years he hasn't had the luxury of learning one offense without, out of the blue, here comes a new offensive coordinater or a new head coach. The West Coast offense isn't something you learn during spring training doing two-a-days. It takes time. If the Reskins will stick with one offensive scheme or one offensive coordinator for longer than two years, maybe a quaterback can be successful with the Redskins. But ever since Danny Boy took over the Redskins that hasn't been the case. If he just sits back and shut up for about three years, I beleive we will revive as a dominant force in football for years to come. And yes, with Jason Campbell at the helm.
The Redskins need to consider going younger with there offensive line. Like any old car, you can't push it but so much. They gave it their all in the first half of the season and broke down afterward. It's not their fault, it's Father Time. If we trade him, let's say for the Fountain of Youth, we would be vertually unstopable. But since he's unavailable in free agency then I think we need to groom some younger guys on our O-line, QUICK. Their not getting any younger, that's for sure.
agreed
Everyone who is saying that Cutler or Brennan should be the starting QB next season is rubbish. Campbell has been a different system about every season and he finally is getting another season to succeed in this system. Let the kid be familiar. i think everyone including Campbell knows that he has yet to prove something to us Redskins fans.He has shown some real nice plays though his years when he has a good O-Line and a solid running game. So let him adjust a little more and if he sucks this season, we throw him out of Washington. I am praying he'll be a good QB because i dont want another rebuilding process.
Hail To The Redskins!
You talking like Jason is garbage. He had spring training to learn the west coast offense and you expect a Super Bowl appearance? Jay has been under the same leadership for how long? I would like for us to get him as amore capable back up other than Todd Collins [RELIC]. But that's not going to happen
Todd Collins is a useless back-up.Agreed On that. The only reason why he lead us that far was because he was literlly in the Al-Saunder's offense for the whole career.
Hail!
Campbell needs to move up a notch this year.no new system ,no new coach, good receiving corp and one of the best running games in the business.and that running game is going to be better this year.Dan has put the money in the defense which should keep campbell and the offense on the field.like sonny says-"ya' gotta score 21 to win.go back and look at last years schedule and give the redskins 21 points. they would have won practically evey game.Campbell better produce or he'll be in Detroit in 2010
IT'S DO OR DIE FOR J.C. IN 09'! By the way, Dallas still sucks!
It's true, Dallas does in fact suck.
and these guys are supposed to be the professionals! I can tell you from sitting on my couch every sunday that jason campbell is a bust. he's not smart enough to be a good pro qb. Cutler is EXACTLY what Zorn needs..
GEEEZ!!!!!!! You all are ruthless!!!!! It was his first year under a new coach and a new system, GIVE THE GUY A BREAK. You won't won't complaining the first eight games when we were in second place and Jason had no interception. Where was the Jason bashing then? Everybody was behind Jason then.
FRONTRUNNER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
