Even though head coach Rex Ryan has publicly stated otherwise, the Jets are in the market for a starting quarterback. Kellen Clemens and Brett Ratliff are young and full of potential, but if New York can land a Pro Bowl-caliber veteran, why wouldn't they? The short answer, I guess, is: they did ... last year, and look how that turned out. Fair enough. Blowing a third-round pick on an old, slow and banged-up Brett Favre was a tad impetuous in hindsight, but surely there is some middle ground between an over-the-hill, future Hall of Famer and a fourth-year guy with 12 career starts.
Last week, word leaked that the Jets would hold a private workout for USC's Mark Sanchez, considered by many the second-best quarterback available in the April draft. And today, Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger writes that the club is monitoring the slow-motion train wreck that is the Jay Cutler situation.
The Jets are doing their due diligence regarding the tenuous situation in Denver and the possible availability of Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, according to a person with knowledge of the team's thinking. ...Right. But Broncos owner Pat Bowlen also said he was "very disappointed" in the way Cutler has handled the two-week saga, so who knows who'll be under center for Denver when the season starts.
The Jets, he said, will never say never regarding a player of Cutler's ability and don't want to publicly take themselves out of the running should Cutler be traded. Denver has said it has no intention of trading the Pro Bowl quarterback, who Monday requested a trade.
Hutchinson thinks it might all be moot, anyway; even if the Broncos decide to ship Cutler out of town, the Jets don't have much to offer. Denver will presumably need a starting quarterback -- even if for just a year -- and there's no reason to think Clemens or Ratliff is an upgrade over Chris Simms.
There's always the possibility of a three-team trade, but as Hutchinson points out, "A third team could [provide a starting-caliber type quarterback] but that team would likely want Cutler for themselves." Which is why the Lions, flush with draft picks, still seem like favorites. Plus, if the Broncos organization wanted to be spiteful, they'd send Cutler to a team that lost 16 times last season.

If the Jets could land Cutler, it would be a great move.

Kellen Clemens is full of potential? Kellen Clemens couldnt start for an arena team and if the Jets cut him no one would pick him up even as a back up. The Jets screwed themselves for the next 5 years by scapegoating Pennington for Schottenhemiers lousy play calling and Mangini's inept coaching. The fact that Pennington took a 1-15 team and won the division and the Jets went 907 with $60 million in free agent signings says it all. The Jets will never replace Pennington and will never finish better than 3rd in their division for the next 5 years

Defense wins championships, with or without Cutler, The Jets got better the day Rex came to town.
I'd love to see him play for us, but the money and the draft picks would be better spent on some pass rushers and picking up a star WR to replace Coles ( would be great if we could grab Holt , he may be old ,but he can at least help mentor the young up and comers.) Who knows , at this point ? We could end up seeing Jeff Garcia in green and white.

Your a little of with your comments dude. Pennington won 10 games last year because they played a weak schedule and Tom Brady got hurt. Eventhough Favre sucked the last few games they still won more games last year and came so close to making the playoffs. If they had Pennington they would have been 7-9 or 8-8. See what happened to him when he played against a good team in the playoffs. He was awful. He threw 4 picks and never was close against the Ravens

Imo , pick up Holt and a star WR in the draft, trade that star WR to the cards for Anquan Boldin who you wouldn't have to develop.
Dream big amirite?

Jets arn't realistic trading partners and no way is Josh gonna send Cutler to Belicheck's evil rival..... here's the more logical trade.... Denver and Cleveland will swap 1st round positions, and Culter and Quinn will be traded straight up... giving the Broncos a chance at 1 of the qbs......... unless Eric Mangini truly isn't kidding about Sanchez.... then it will be his pick at 5
