Clinton Portis to Miss Start of Redskins' Offseason Program

As the Washington Redskins opened their offseason conditioning program Monday, one player said he couldn't fit it into his schedule.

Running back Clinton Portis told coach Jim Zorn that he wouldn't be showing up, but Zorn doesn't sound concerned about the absence of his top running back. From Jason Reid of the Washington Post:
"I fully expect him to be here participating at some point," Zorn said. "I talked to Clinton on the phone yesterday, and he knows what it means. He's just trying to work out his schedule. He's been working out his schedule."
That's a more accommodating attitude than football coaches usually have toward their players skipping workouts. I agree with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, who notes that Portis has had almost three months off to work out his schedule. Seems like a strange excuse.

But these workouts are voluntary, and it's not like the Redskins are going to cut Portis, so there's really not much the team can do. Given that, maybe Zorn's approach is the right one: Just accept that some players are going to work out on their own schedules, and not the team's.
