After a surprising 10-win season in 2007, followed by the more familiar four-win effort a year ago, the Browns enter the offseason as one of the most enigmatic teams in the league. They have a new head coach, a revamped roster, and, depending on who you ask, the potential to win anywhere from 2 to 11 games in 2009.
The team's biggest concern: the starting quarterback. After selecting left tackle Joe Thomas third overall in the '07 draft, Cleveland traded back up into the first round to grab Brady Quinn. And he promptly got comfortable on the bench as Derek Anderson played his way to the Pro Bowl. His success was fleeting, though, and by the middle of last season, Quinn had won the job.
Unfortunately, that lasted just three weeks; he broke a finger on his throwing hand and would eventually land on injured reserve. Eric Mangini has previously stated that he's in no hurry to name a starter, presumably because he's not all that impressed with his choices.
Anderson has proved capable of playing at a relatively high level, although he has struggled with accuracy on short and intermediate throws. Quinn, on the other hand, has attempted just 48 passes in his two-year career, and managed a 49.5 percent completion rate. Which is why the Browns might be dark-horse candidates to draft a quarterback. At least according to the National Football Post's Michael Lombardi:
In the first round, you have a good feeling who the competition will be for drafting a QB. The 49ers are major players, as are the Jets and Bucs. You will always have a few surprises for the quarterback derby because a team you might not suspect will sometimes jump in and make a move. My surprise team this year is the Browns. On paper, they have Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn, but neither is very accurate and neither is an Eric Mangini player. When a new coach comes in, as we've seen in Denver, changes happen.Could the Browns draft their second franchise quarterback in three years? Sure. It seems unlikely, but so did the thought of the Broncos trying to trade Jay Cutler for a guy who went nine years between starts. I suspect there's a market for both Anderson and Quinn (like, say, Denver should they get around to making Cutler's dreams come true), but that means the Cleveland fans should expect at least one more year of hard-to-watch football. Good luck selling that to the masses, Mangenius.
I know all of Cleveland has great hopes for Quinn, but the general feeling in the NFL is that he's too inaccurate and too inconsistent to be a full time starter. Quinn slipped in the draft two years ago for a reason, and that reason was his inability to be accurate on all three levels. As Cleveland makes changes to its roster, don't count out making a move at quarterback.
Sure, there's the possibility that, with a talented rookie quarterback, next season's Browns could resemble the 2008 Ravens, but that team had a suffocating defense and a punishing rushing attack -- two things Cleveland lacks. On the upside, the organization already has its big-play wide receiver in place.

Come on, guys...a new head coach doesn't always have to draft a new QB. Mangini needs to stand pat and work with what he's got for a change instead of shaking things up just for the hell of it.
It's called 'development'. It's what half-decent players do once they get to the NFL. How the heck do you know what you have in any of your quarterbacks if the guys can't stay upright long enough to throw a pass? Your Browns ended last year with Bruce effing Gradkowski as the starter - he wasn't even on the original roster when the season started.
Screw getting a QB - there's no value at your pick anyway. If you're lucky, Eugene Monroe will still be there for you to snag and plug on the other side of Joe Thomas, so you won't have to worry about that part of your line for a few good years. Then, maybe your QB can actually stay on his feet long enough for you to see what he's got.
Oh, and use the second-round pick on a corner because you need one BADLY.

Wow, eric mangini is an dumbass..I am a redskins fan, but i must say eric mangani is a terrible coach. He cant evaluate talent for his life, and us here in washington think that out GM and coach is bad. Brady Quinn played freakin 3 games and got injured. Give the kid a chance.

What a dumb move that would be. Quinn had only a few games, and then got hurt. That's nowhere near enough time to see if a QB will work out for the long term. I'm going to agree with my fellow Redskins fan up there and say that Mangini seems to be a really bad coach.

Like I said before, IF ITS BROWN---FLUSH IT DOWN!
Again, call it what you want, development, rebuilding, new coaching it boils down to poor front office practices. The Browns have no direction or core philosophy on playing the game. Either Quinn or Anderson will get this team to the playoffs. Not to mention the second rate performance of entire rest of the team.
Go Steelers!

Truth is,Cleveland had nobody to throw the damn ball to last year.Edwards led the league in drops,Winslow was injured when he was even able to take the field and Stalworth played in less than 2 games all year.Jurevicius never saw the field at all.Winslow and Jurevicius are now gone and Stalworth may or may not be playing prison ball this year.I have never seen a team with so many injuries clear across the board in my entire life. The O-Line took a major step backwards last year and the running game was not able to control anything. We had buffoons for a coaching staff, second to none.Heaping the blame on DA or Quinn is just plain stupid at this point. This team has way too many ?'s and holes to fill, to even think of drafting another QB.What we have at that position right now is far and away better than ANY QB in this years draft.

DRAFT ANOTHER QB? ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME? I've been a Browns fan since Turkey Joe Jones crotch scooped Terry Bradshaw and spiked him on his ugly Pittsburgh head but I honestly think I'm done. The last few months have been nails in the coffin. First they fire Romeo, no problem there, but then they rush to hire the half azzed coach of a half azzed team. Mangina comes in and starts making waves right away. He trades the most talented athlete on the team. He cuts a local favorite. He acts like an ass towards the best defensive player. He gets a whole bunch of ex Jets on the team that couldn't make the playoffs last year. He wants to implement a power running game. Well that's great if you have a workhorse RB on your team that can handle the pounding. Not to mention a big bad offensive line geared towards running the ball. Last time I checked the Browns don't have either. Now they're saying Mangina wants to draft a new QB. Heck, Stallworth went out and killed someone just to get away from this bad situation LOL. When does the stupidity end? How can anyone be optimistic about this team?

Man you made my day when I read this. That image of Bradshaw getting teabagged and planted head first into the ground will always bring a smile to the face of any Browns fan.

truckerking: Calm down. This is just some douchebag NFL writer suggesting the Browns MIGHT make a surprise pick in the draft or a trade for a QB.It's not Mangini saying any such thing. We both know Romeo HAD to go.You should also know Winslow HAD to go as well. There's going to have to be some tough decisions ahead to get this team straightened out.Shaun Rogers needs to give us leadership on and off the field, but if he wants to whine and bitch about trivial crap like that, then I would be shopping his ass too.The recent acquisitions are not huge no,but they are low risk short term plugs that will help this defense and O-Line,and they are quality veteran players that Mangini trusts and is familiar with.I've been a fan longer than you have,so I am just as frustrated with this team, but I don't think Mangini is a bad coach at all,and we are going to have to give him a chance now.Let's see what shakes out here in the next 6 weeks before we start throwing the guy under the bus.We now have a 1st and 2 2nd rounders in the draft and maybe we do trade 1 of our QB's for another pick or 2,I don't know, maybe we even take a stab at bringing in Cutler,I doubt it,but I am really curious to see what happens here and the reasons behind it.

Yeah, I realize that this is just sports writers throwing around rumors but after talking to my son all weekend about the state of the Browns team those headlines had me wanting to blind myself after reading them.
I'm not usually one to jump on the negative band wagon but at a certain point you get sick of seeing the same dumb moves year after year.
If Winslow had to go because of injury problems then I have no problem with the move. If he went because he's not a "nice" guy then I do have a problem. If a guy can catch the ball he can drop kick babies for all I care. At this point and time who on this team is capable of catching 40 passes this coming season?
Oh yeah, I can see the Browns making a high profile deal with Cutler. Then we'll sign LT and Randy Moss and monkeys will fly out of my... nose.
I hope that I'm wrong but I just don't see an upside to anything that Mangini has done thus far. But what do I know, I thought when we got Butch Davis he was going to be the second coming of Paul Brown.

The trade for Cutler could involve the Broncos and Browns swapping 1st round picks, and quinn for Cutler.... both teams would get equal value... Denver gets 5th pick and browns pick 12th.... Denver wants a runner stuffer and the Browns want a linebacker and both teams make out in the deal.

The Quinn/Cutler deal proposed with 1 round picks switching makes the most sense in the comments I've read so far. Tampa Bay would probably be interested in Derek Anderson because of his low cap number.... so the Browns could pick up the 1st rounder.... If the Browns draft a linebacker with Denvers pick, then grab a receiver at 19 they could all of a sudden be contenders this coming year with Cutler. They will have to address running back in the second round and another linebacker/cb, hence Mangini will have completely rehauled the Browns in his 1st year. This really makes alot of sense to me.

I like that idea with swapping Quinn and Cutler also. Denver kind of has no choice but to do something now after they handled everythign so far. I still feel that the Browns need to draft defense with their first 3 picks though. They also need to find a way to get Cribbs on the field with this offense other then trick plays. That guy running out of the slot reciever position would give defenses hell and with the money we are going to have to pay him he can't just be a special teamer.
