After weeks and weeks of waiting -- a period of time which included Torry Holt asking for his release and the Rams letting him know he wasn't welcome to workout with them -- the Rams have done the inevitable. Holt, one of the best receivers in franchise history, has been cut by the St. Louis Rams.
The move, along with cutting Orlando Pace earlier this week, will save the Rams upwards of $14 million in cap space. The Greatest Show on Turf is becoming more and more of a distant memory, as the roster is transformed to the liking of new head coach, Steve Spagnuolo.
During his decade-long stint in St. Louis, Holt established himself as one of the most prolific wide receivers in the NFL. Between 2000 and 2007, he caught at least 81 passes in each season. His lowest yardage total during that time was 1,188, and his lowest touchdown output was four. All told, Holt compiled 869 catches for 12,660 yards and 74 touchdowns. Perhaps most impressive, he only missed two games out of a possible 160.
Holt also established himself as a postseason performer, garnering 47 catches for 630 yards and four touchdowns in 10 playoff games -- including a 7-catch, 109 yard, one-touchdown effort in his first Super Bowl appearance.
The Holt of the past will be greatly missed in St. Louis, but his massive decline in numbers during the 2008 season could point to a decline in skills. The 32-year-old will attempt to catch on somewhere else and prove the down numbers weren't due to his personal declination at all, instead a product of a pathetic overall offense.
We'll have to wait another eight months or so before knowing the real answer. In the meantime, Torry Holt is a free agent.

As a Rams fan I laugh at the Niners fans for thinking there loser opinion matters.
It's a damn shame that the Rams front offices inability to address the woes of the offensive line the past three years has led to the demise of The Greatest Show on Turf.
Admit it Niner fans, you were excited when you brought in Mike Martz and Isaac Bruce. You really wanted to sign Kurt Warner and as soon as you heard Torry Holt's grumblings about wanting to be released, you were already picturing The Greatest Show on Turf West.
I hate to see Torry go. He still has quite a few routes still left in him. He just needs an O-Line that will give the quarterback more than half a second to throw the ball to him and his teammates.
Hate to see you go Big Game, also hated to see The Big O in Orlando Pace go also. I'm sure our line would have been more stable the past two years if you could have stayed healthy. We had quite a run there and it was fun to watch Rams football again.
The new regime is in place and we are already making solid decisions with free agent aquisitions and retaining our own young playmakers. I can't wait for the draft to see what kind of decisions we make then. After all is said and done I am sure we will be back where we belong. Atop the NFC West!
Go Rams!!
