Terrell Owens on Buffalo: 'Ummmmmm'

Terrell Owens' signing with the Buffalo Bills was a bigger shock than when the Dallas Cowboys released him. Buffalo, with all the charm of a typical small-market team, simply did not seem like the franchise that would go out on a limb to ink the controversial wideout.

But it did. And Owens recently did his first interview with a Buffalo-area radio station, appearing on the Shredd and Ragan show (.mp3), via SportsRadioInterviews.com, where he was asked about how excited he was to head to the Bills. His response? A fantastically awkward pause.
Ragan:Tell us a little bit about when your agent asked you about Buffalo ... what did you think?

[really awkward three-second pause]

Owens: "Ummmmmmmm ..."

[even more awkward four-second pause]

"What did I think when he said Buffalo?"

Ragan: "Um, hm."

Owens: "Well at that point in time it was, uh, ju ... I had prev ... I was just going up there to have a meeting. And I thought that was just going to be the start of the process of me finding a team."
Owens then goes on to say/imply that his trip was so much fun that he couldn't think of going anywhere else but Buffalo. And for the most part, he does seem to be fairly calm about heading to the Bills.

But when a professional football player -- particularly one who's managed by Drew Rosenhaus -- isn't properly coached up for the beginning of the interview and a fairly obvious first question, well, something is awry.

Namely, the fact that this situation reeks of the following chain of events: Owens and Rosenhaus go to Buffalo, get high-balled by the Bills, and recognize that there wasn't a chance in hell they were getting more money anywhere else. In other words, it happened so fast that Owens didn't even really have time to properly prepare.

Of course, it appears as if the Bills are catering to his every need anyway: he never even had to ask James Hardy for the No. 81 jersey he'll be sporting on the field, Owens just showed up and the Bills had, one way or another, gotten Hardy to give up his digits. Needless to say, it should be a fun season in Buffalo.
