It was, apparently, Manning Day in Mississippi on Tuesday (no, not that Manning Day). The state Senate and a slew of legislators even stopped working -- no big deal in these pleasantly profitable times -- to honor the Manning family for their wonderful contributions to the state.Archie Manning and Eli Manning were both there, accepting awards as former quarterbacks at Ole Miss. Not attending? Peyton Manning. Why? Because he was playing golf with Tiger Woods, obviously. AP reports:
Archie apologized for the absence of Peyton. But he had a good excuse - he was in Florida playing a round of golf with Tiger Woods. Now, let's think about this for a second. What's more ridiculous? That the entire state of Mississippi had it's political system shut down for a little while to honor a family which has only one member (the recently relocated Eli) living in the state? Or the fact that Peyton was brazen enough to skip a celebration in the Mississippi state legislature to play golf? Or, my favorite, that the importance of Tiger 100%, totally and completely outweighs a bunch of people in charge of running the country and no one bats an eye ... even the politicians?
"I got a text message this morning that said, '(Woods) just birdied the first hole,"' Archie Manning told the crowd of breathless senators. "About 15 minutes later I got another one that said, 'He just birdied the second hole.' I texted back that he was just lucky."

you know I might not be a colts fan or a manning fan for that matter but that's pretty ridiculous on the states senate's side and pretty rude on peyton's side. i mean their making it a day in honer of the manning family's contributions and he's off playing golf with Wood's I'm sure they do that enough that just goes to show the fame is starting to get the Peyton's head just a little more then before.

If Tennessee (where Peyton went) had a Manning Day would anybody care if Eli didn't show for the same reason?

Peyton is not God. He is a talented football quarterback and most of all ... he is a human being. He is preparing emotionally for the wrapping up of an extraordinary career.
He will get ... that congruency connects powerfully to the public ... and it is the only way to win a competition as a professional athlete. This is God's rule book! Mitch

I'm confused to why this is fame that has gone to his head? Why because someone declares it Manning Day, it wasn't PEYTON MANNING DAY...and before you make a "DAY" for anyone you expect to show up...how about clearing it with the Guest of Honors.....You'd be seeing it a bit different if the shoe were on your foot.... Celebrity's can not go to every little thing people want to honor them for...they'd never have a life at all...personally, I'd have played golf with anyone than show up to a bunch of spoiled politicians who think they are GODS!!! hello....

I don't blame Peyton one bit. First in these times the state is wasting the tax players money. I would have done the same thing after i told them not to waste their money on something so insucnificant and to put the money into the problem areas of the state. Peyton didn't ahve to show up. yes it might have been nice but i for one don't fault him in not showing up. besides if were making a big stink over not showing up at a meaningless function than we should be making an even bigger stink about all the althletes who get arrest for dui and drugs. They are the ones who think they are above everyone else. This just shows us where our priorities are making a fuss who shows up where instead of making the use of drugs seem unimportant.

Peyton is a grown man, he don't need to be told where to be. If he didn't feel like going why should he have to? It said no one there minded anyways. If that is the worst you can dig up on peyton I suggest you try to target someone else.

Nice of the state of Mississippi. Did they notify the Manning family early enough? If I had gotten the chance to play a round with Tiger I would have sent my apologies and played with Tiger.

As a Patriots fan, I think Payton is a dufuss, but I would have played golf with Tiger. Playing golf with Tiger Woods is on many peoples top 10 list, if not the top.

I, too, am a die-hard Pats fan (30 years of fandom); however, I think a lot of Peyton Manning. He has a great wit (not to mention great commercials), is charitable, as well as a pretty darn good quarterback. That being said, I do think that Peyton should have made an effort to attend this "Manning Day" event with his father and brother. Since he is a celebrity, I'm sure he and Tiger Woods could have found another day to play together - all it takes is saying, "sorry, I have another commitment".
