Everyone is on Facebook (even FanHouse -- become a fan, holmes!) My older family members, old high-school teachers, everyone. It's just a fact of life. Here's another fact of life: if you write something on your Facebook page, it's possible for everyone to see it. Texas lineman Buck Burnette learned this the hard way. And now, so has Dan Leone, a former employee of the Philadelphia Eagles, who was recently fired for referring to the team as "retarted" (though he presumably meant "retarded") in his Facebook status.
Specifically, Leone wrote the following after Brian Dawkins was signed by the Broncos:
"Dan is [expletive] devastated about Dawkins signing with Denver. . .Dam Eagles R Retarted!!"Philadelphia Inquirer columnist John Gonzalez defends the former Eagles' employee, primarily because he suffered from transverse myelitis as a child, which continues to impair his ability to walk quickly around a stadium, a significant part of his job as the west gate chief for the last six years.
Additionally, Leone is a die-hard Eagles fan who has worshiped the team since he was a young man. There are many reasons to be upset that the team decided to fire him for his public sentiment against the team.

But as sad as the story is, and as much as Gonzalez wants to portray the Eagles as a cold, uncaring organization, I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with the team here: if you are employed by a company, in any capacity, and they give you a paycheck, you should, under no circumstances, ever write something derogatory about the company in a public forum.
And yeah, I'm sure that Leone isn't the only Eagles fan who is upset about Dawkins leaving, but (just as Dan Levy told FanHouse recently) football is a business. And teams are required to make business decisions. If you're an employee of that team, you're probably best served remembering that Facebook updates have a way of making it out into the world at large.

I have no problem with the team firing the guy because he bad mouthed the company. However, if he was fired because he used the word "retarded," I have a huge problem. I am so tired of political correctness effectively censuring people's thoughts. The article seems to indicate that the Eagles fired the guy because of negative comments about the company he works for. If it was for the use of the word, well then the Eagles really are retarded.

The thing with firing people for something they write on there personal time is that it borders on taking away the right the freedom of press. I realize that the constitution has become a joke and the country treats the amendments like they are made to be broken. The reason why we were at one time a free country was because of these amendments that were created to protect our rights. If there is constantly something else that we can not do then it will not be long before we can do nothing. After a while there will be so many new political rules and laws that everyone will have to live very, very similar lives and that is how they treat inmates as a punishment. It is not how they should treat law abiding citizens. Personally I do not have a face book page but I think if you choose to you should be able to say what you like without consequence. If he was doing his job then he should not be fired based on a face book line that was written off the clock.

Further proof that only the ignorant use that word (and can not even spell it none the less!)
As a mother of an extremely intelligent yet mentally challenged, adorable five year old, it hits a very raw nerve deep in my soul to see and hear this word everywhere, since people use this term in the place of "dumb" "stupid or "weird" which a mentally challenged person IS NOT! One would assume that using a racial or sexist slur would get you fired as well, but this is not the case with this terrible word! I am so thrilled that people are opening their eyes and respecting that this word is just as bad as the others which have rightfully been banned!!

Wrong! EVERY company I have ever worked for had me sign a confidentiality agreement. I GUARANTEE the Eagles have it in their organization because it is mandated by the NFL. Why? Because when an employee makes a derogatory remark about the team they work for, they are in fact commenting on the league as well.
The moral of the story? Don't post your real info on Facebook...especially if you're biting the hand that feeds you.

Even if it's a business decision, it's a horrible business decision. Brian Dawkins is the leader of the defense and he's still a huge playmaker.
And yeah when you factor in that he wanted to retire as an Eagle, that the city loves him, that he plays his heart out on every down, that 13 seasons should matter in the minds of the front office, it's a terrible, terrible decision to trade him.

I'm sure plenty Eagles fans feel the same way. Are they going to fire them as well? Since I'm not an Eagles fan, I guess I'm exempt. Retards!

Don't insult the MR community ! My son has mental retardation and would never even think of trading Brian Dawkins! The Eagles are probably trying to give Donovan a message. Let the guy keep his job because in these economic crappy times, he'll never get another one.

After reading this article, I can honestly say that I think that the author, Will Brinson, is also "retarted." He owes his right to write what he thinks to the 1st Amendment. Dan Leone should have the same right.

Leone has the right to say whatever he wants of Facebook (and Twitter, btw), but he also has to deal with the consequences. He was not a contract employee, but a part-time "security" chief at the West gate.
There will be plenty of fans applying for his job in the fall who are smart enough to call the team "retarted" without leaving an electronic paper trail.
Remember, Dan, if you don't post it online, you don't have to worry about spelling it correctly!
