Jabari Greer Signs With New Orleans

The New Orleans Saints have bolstered their secondary, signing cornerback Jabari Greer to a four-year deal. Greer is coming off a two-year stint as a starter for the Buffalo Bills, and he was having a breakout season in 2008 before falling injured.

This deal is likely especially exciting for Saints fans, due to their almost palpable hatred of Jason David. Plus, Tracy Porter -- who was off to a great start to his rookie season before getting hurt himself -- will also be returning to the lineup. Having Greer and Porter as the starting corners in 2009 represents a huge upgrade from what we saw New Orleans cart out in the second half of last season.
"We are excited about acquiring Jabari. He has the skill set you are looking for in a corner," said Head Coach Sean Payton. "He brings speed and cover ability to the position. He has come into this league and quickly has established a reputation for himself and we are very pleased with this addition to our team."
Improving the secondary was a huge priority in the offseason for the Saints, considering they had the top passing offense in the NFL but the 23rd ranked pass defense. Overall, they scored more points than any other team, but it wasn't even good enough to finish with a record better than .500, because they allowed more points than all but six teams in the league. Adding Greer and getting Porter back is a good way to close the gap.

This signing alone won't bring the defense all the way to respectability, but it's a nice little step in the right direction.
