Giants Made Haynesworth an Offer, Not in Redskins' Ballpark

When free agency opened last week, the New York Giants liked free agent defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and planned to make him a lucrative offer that would make him among the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL.

But once the Giants found out about the offer the Redskins had on the table, they knew they couldn't compete.

The Redskins guaranteed Haynesworth $41 million in the first three years of a seven-year contract, Giants General Manager Jerry Reese said that far surpassed what his team was willing to spend:
"We did make a good offer. It would be awful for us not to even put our toe in the water and (then) the guy goes to his press conference in Washington and says, 'I really wanted to be a Giant, but they never offered me anything.' We made a nice offer, but obviously it wasn't in that ballpark."
Although Haynesworth's contract with the Redskins has been widely reported as seven years and $100 million, the most important number to keep in mind is the $41 million guaranteed in the first three years. It's not clear whether any team other than the Redskins was even close to offering Haynesworth that kind of cash, but the Giants say they most certainly weren't.
