Two years ago, Drew Bennett was one of the most heavily touted targets of a pretty lackluster free agent wide receiver crop. The Rams managed to outbid several other teams for the ex-Titan, snagging the big receiver with a six-year, $30-million deal.In hindsight it was one of the dumber moves the Rams have made in a while. The Rams let Bennett go on Wednesday, even though it will save them only $50,000 on the salary cap. In essence, St. Louis decided that it would be better off without Bennett, even though it would have cost them very little to keep him.
Bennett caught 34 passes in two seasons. He was very disappointing in 2007, then broke his leg in the opener this year and missed the rest of the season. Although he won't end up collecting all $30 million because of the release, it will still work out to nearly $300,000 per catch, as Bennett received more than $13 million in the first two years of the deal.
It wouldn't be a shocker to see the Titans try to bring Bennett back at a bargain rate, just like they did with Justin McCareins last season after the Jets let him go.
The Rams also let go of Trent Green, again. Green second stint in St. Louis is one to forget -- he threw six interceptions and no touchdowns in three games. Considering Green's concussion history, and the fact that he's now four years away from his last decent season, this could be the end of Green's 15-year career. The Rams will get some cap relief from letting Green go, as it clears $1.3 million in cap space.
