Word on the Street: Eagles, McNabb Working on New Deal

Just before Thanksgiving, Donovan McNabb's career in Philadelphia looked to be heading to its inglorious end. After getting benched in a blowout loss to the Ravens, there was nothing left to do but play out the season, pack up his stuff and get the hell out of town.

Then the Eagles won four of their final five games to sneak into the playoffs, made it to the NFC Championship before running into the Cards, and now McNabb appears to again be the team's quarterback of the future.

Via the Philly Inquirer:
[A team] source ... did not deny the Eagles plan to meet with Donovan McNabb's agent, Fletcher Smith, to discuss a contract extension, and seemed confident a deal will be completed with the 32-year-old quarterback. McNabb has two years remaining on his current deal. Smith could not be reached for comment.
Maybe McNabb was never really in danger of losing the gig, or perhaps the thought of Kevin Kolb taking over the job seemed too much like a rebuilding project for the Eagles. (And, frankly, frightening.)

Plus, it's not like free agency has much to offer -- between the short-term solutions (Kerry Collins, Jeff Garcia) and long shots (Chris Simms, J.P. Losman, Kyle Boller), there's not a lot to choose from. And for as infuriatingly inconsistent as McNabb can be at times, he's still one of the 10 best quarterbacks in the league.
