Jamaal Anderson's Struggles Put
Falcons in Bind

Jamaal Anderson may have been the Falcons' first-round pick in 2007, but over the past two years, he's been outplayed by his backup, Chauncey Davis.

That leaves the Falcons with a difficult decision as the offseason begins. Davis is a free agent who logically would like to land a starting job somewhere. The Falcons can't really afford to lose him with Anderson looking like a bust (even if they won't say that). But because of Anderson's presence, there is a good chance that the Falcons will lose Davis.

Davis is probably best as a No. 3 defensive end, but it's easy to see how he's been better than Anderson. In two seasons as a starter, Anderson has 57 tackles, two sacks and six passes defensed. In those two seasons as Anderson's backup, Davis has 68 tackles, six sacks and a pass defensed.

While the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Davis wants to come back to Atlanta, it also includes this quote from his agent.
"To be very honest with you, he wants to be a starter," said Kevin Conner, Davis' Atlanta-based agent. "He feels, at this point, he's ready to take his career to that next level."
Even with Anderson's unproductiveness, it's hard to believe the Falcons will promise Davis a good shot at a starting jobs. And if that means Davis leaves, the Falcons will either have to find a suitable replacement for Davis in free agency or add it to the list of draft needs.
