It didn't take long for the instant historians to proclaim Santonio Holmes' improbable end zone grab the "greatest catch in Super Bowl history." It's certainly in the conversation, but I'm not comfortable crowning it the best reception in 43 years, particularly hours after the fact.
Especially since the Giants' David Tyree has a pretty good argument for why his theatrics 12 months ago is still the most amazing outta-nowhere, game-on-the-line play most of us have ever seen.
"If they really want to give it away, they can give it away," [Tyree] said of the mantle of greatest catch in Super Bowl history. But when viewed in the big picture, Tyree thinks his gem has an edge. You know, I'm a Steelers fan and I actually think Tyree's catch was more impressive. Not necessarily more clutch, but taken in context, more jaw-droppingly unbelievable. Think about it this way: the Patriots were 18-0, the Giants were 12-point underdogs, and the coronation to perfection was well underway before kickoff.
"If you talk about the drama and everything that was on the line in our game last year, I don't know if all those intangibles were on the line [this year]," he said...
New York was not only able to stay in the game, but they actually took the lead with 35 seconds to go and, well, nodoby saw that coming. Throw in the fact that Tyree somehow managed to pin the ball against his helmet as Rodney Harrison bludgeoned him to the ground and there's your winner.
Even if you don't buy that argument, there's this: the officials should've ruled Homles' out of bounds. You see, in professional football, you have to get two feet down to constitute a legal catch. And that obviously wasn't the case. Oh, wait.
In all seriousness, I suspect neither Tyree nor Holmes care much about GOAT rankings; the bottom line remains the same: both guys played a major role in their team's success in the most important game of the season. And that, ultimately, is all that matters.

Holmes' catch was much more impressive, mainly because unlike Tyree's, it was actually legit.
On the Tyree, there were not one, not two, but three (count em) blatent holds by the Giants offensive line that allowed Manning to escape to make that play. For any other game or any other team, that play would've been negated in a heartbeat. Thats why the announcers (I think Buck/Aikman, but not positive) did not display that much enthusiasm after the play, as they assumed (rightfully so) that there would be flags, and the play would be overturned. Its amazing how people forget this kinda important detail...

see Holmes' catch is a catch they are supposed to make. A catch Marvin Harrison makes 16 times a year, that Chris Carter is trying to get in the hall of fame on and that Jerry Rice does as part of his morning routine. Corner of the endzone two-toe-tap with cbs bearing down. Yawn. Sure its Superbowl, sure its game winner but the catch itself, while amazing is amazingly mundane.
Meanwhile Tyree caught a ball that was overthrown with one hand and his head with the undisputed dirtiest player in the game in dirty playing position. Sure its somewhat luck, but thats whats makes it best! You could watch hundred games a year for a hundred years you will not see a helmet catch. And he did it. And it wasn't the star receiver number one option, it was a guy who if not for this catch hed be helping FredEx take attendance.
Holmes catch was something youd expect by the Superbowl favorite to beat a team that shouldve been beaten. Tyree mad a "your effing kidding" catch so the "no chance in hell" team could be beat the "greatest team ever to play"
That makes it better.

Excellent analysis, horatiowrd. Tyree's catch was one in a million. Holmes catch, not so much.

WORST OFFICATING EVER! Except for the game in Detroit!IT CLEARLY was NOT A CATCH!! His feet were crossed-over one another!! Try it yourself! Both feet were never down! Notice they only showed the view from the opposite goal line once, because the T.V. guys new it wasn't a touchdown! Look at the photo in U.S.A. Today..they cut the feet out of the photo because the photo shows he didn't get BOTH feet down in bounds! Don't worry about my sour grapes, I took Arizona +7! The refs GAVE THE GAME UP ! Holding on the "100" yard run-back, Warner's "FUMBLE" ETC. What Bull-#$@%^#& !!!

Why is it the most recent events are the only ones that could possibly be the "best ever"? I think it's silly for anyone to believe that they can boil down the best of anything to their two choices. There have been a lot of Super Bowls, and there have been a LOT of spectacular catches over the years. If you're simply trying to find out which of these two seem more dramatic, skillful, important, etc., then fine--but the best EVER? A statement like that better come with a few disclaimers attached, if you don't want to come off as just another hack writer.

YAWN....Hmmmmm...Where do we start?! Ike and Larry jumpball for a touch down (Larry didn't maintain control and ground helped him get posession).Harrison getting held every play. Warners fumble that was called back. Bens TD that was called back. Warner takes off his helmet on the field to argue with official( no penalty called). Bens throw down field for a 1st down and a bull holding penalty was called for a safety. Just a few. Oh I forgot....Ben drives 88 yards down field with a so called terrible offensive line.....with 2:37 left...Hines had a bumb knee. Ben was the 2nd most sacked QB in the league.....uh oh what's THIS.Bens scrambles...stops...thrown to the corner of the endzone TOUCHDOWN SANTONIO HOLMES!!!!! STEELERS WIN THE SUPERBOWL!!!!! End of story.Go home haters.

His toes weren't down? Lol, yu guys aren't serious are you? Oh wait, you are. Sorry, but in the back end pics I saw his toes are firmly on the turf, period! Great catch yes. Greatest ever? I have no idea. It will surely be replayed 1000 times every year from here on until the NFL ceases to exist. And I guess thats what galls so many people: Not only did the Steelers win, but they won on a fablous play. Luck involved? Of course ... there's always an element of luck (after all, a pidgeon could have pooped on the ball and destroyes the pass, so I guess it was luck that the pidgeon wasn't there). This is football folks, not chess ... luck is in every play. The whiff of the wind on a pass, the running back that somehow rights himsef after a near tackle where 90% of the time he wouldnt do it, the holding penalty that get blotted out from the view of the refs by irrelevant action elsewhere, etc etc etc. Tyree's pass was luck as well ... if the football had hit his hands and head at a slightly different angle, then opps ... incomplete pass and the Pats are 19-0. All that needs to be said is that, like it or not, when one goes to the game at Heinz Field next year there will be 6 Lombardis, not 5.

One more time... slowly... for all those who think if the catch isn't made Cardinals won. The Cardinals did not lose because Santonio's catch was declaired as good. They lost because they didn't score as many points as Pittsburgh. If the catch wasn't made, hey it was only 2nd down and a field goal sends it to overtime.
However, Santonio did make the catch! A ref not looking at pictures, but the actual feet declared it so. We will never know what would have happened with those next two downs if they were needed.
I know this is all new to Arizona fans, so I will give this tip. Look at the scoreboard, after the game. If you have more points... you won. If not... you lost. Believe me, as a Steeler fan, I swallowed my bitter pills where I did not like calls and it cost us a game or a championship especially in the 80's and 90's. But you have to play the game according to the calls the refs give you. That is a rule too, that you all seem to feel you are exempt from.

I agree that Holmes catch was a great catch, but the overall situation I think predisposes Tyree's catch to be better in that the Giants were down by 4 points, and only a TD would have helped them. Also, the Steelers were inside the 10, whereas the Giants were not even at mid-field when Tyree made the catch. If Holmes doesn't make the catch, they kick an extremely short field goal (essentially an extra point), and go into overtime. Tyree doesn't make that catch, most likely the game is over.

First, I'm a Steelers fan and I think the Tyree catch was better in terms of "How the hell did he do that". Neither are the best ever but in the top ten.
Second, Holmes catch in the endzone was in fact a catch. Don't sit there and look at pictures of his feet as he's going down after the catch, watch the play in full and you see he clearly comes down in bounds. Not even a questionable play my friends.
Good game to the Cardinals and their fans. Better luck next season. GO STEELERS!

For John: I may be "misremembering", but I don't believe the famous Dwight Clark catch was in a Super Bowl, but rather allowed them to stay alive so they could eventually get to the Super Bowl. I'll admit, that was one I was thinking of, too.
