Brett Favre Could Spill Beans on Retirement Next Week

On Monday, Sports Illustrated's Peter King wrote that "You're kidding yourself if you think [Brett Favre's] going to move back to New Jersey for 12 to 16 weeks in March. 'I've never been in a [full] offseason program,' Favre told me a month ago..."

This was in response to Jets owner Woody Johnson, who during a radio appearance last week, offered this: "If [Favre] wants to play and he comes in early, which he will, and goes through the training like everybody else, we'll ... (Brian) Schottenheimer will give him a playbook and he'll have a lot more time to prepare."

As the New York Daily News' Rich Cimini points out, that's hardly Johnson giving Favre an ultimatum. "Would Johnson like Favre to show up before August? Yeah, sure. But there was no 'or else' consequences, primarily because it's January."

There's plenty of time work out the details. In the meantime, Cimini raises another important issue:
This could be [Rex] Ryan's first real challenge as a coach. What if Favre tells him, "I'll come back on one condition: No off-season program for me." Then, what? The players, led by Kerry Rhodes, made it clear at the end of the season that they'd accept Favre back but only if he worked out with them in the offseason.
Well, Kerry Rhodes might not get his wish. NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that Favre will meet with Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum as early as next week to decide his professional future. And I suspect if Favre announces his retirement, he'll actually stay retired. Unless, of course, the Vikings can find a way to bring him to Minnesota.
