Hired: Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions
Schwartz, who had been Tennessee's defensive coordinator, inherits a Detroit team that finished 0-16 in 2008. He recently added Gunther Cunningham to his first staff as defensive coordinator.

Hired: Rex Ryan, New York Jets
The well-liked Ryan landed his first head-coaching gig in the Big Apple, where he will lead the Jets. Ryan spent the past four seasons as Baltimore's defensive coordinator, leading one of the NFL's top defenses.

Hired: Steve Spagnuolo, St. Louis Rams
One of the most sought-after head coaching prospects in the league, Spagnuolo will move from his position as the Giants defensive coordinator to St. Louis, where he will try and rebuild the Rams.

Hired: Raheem Morris, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Bucs twice promoted Morris once the 2008 season ended. Initially, he was tabbed as the team's new defensive coordinator, replacing Monte Kiffin. Then, when the team canned Jon Gruden, Morris ascended to head coach.

Fired: Jon Gruden, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Both Gruden and general manager Bruce Allen were canned after the team collapsed following a 9-3 start and failed to make the playoffs. It was a stunning turn of events for the coach who brought Tampa Bay a Super Bowl title in 2003.

Hired: Jim Caldwell, Indianapolis Colts
Caldwell will step in for Tony Dungy as the new head coach of the Colts. Dungy hired Caldwell in Tampa Bay in 2001, then brought him to Indianapolis in 2002. Last year, Caldwell was tabbed as Dungy's heir.

Retired: Tony Dungy, Indianapolis Colts
Perhaps the most well-respected coach in all of the NFL, Dungy announced his retirement after seven seasons with the Colts. Dungy racked up 139 wins in Tampa Bay and Indianapolis and won a Super Bowl title.

Hired: Josh McDaniels, Denver Broncos
The 32-year-old McDaniels will take over for Mike Shanahan in Denver. McDaniels had been New England's offensive coordinator, and helped groom quarterbacks Tom Brady and Matt Cassel.

Fired: Mike Shanahan, Denver Broncos
An incredible late-season collapse ended Shanahan's 14-year run with Denver. The Broncos led the AFC West by three games with three weeks left, but lost the division title in a Week 17 blowout loss to San Diego.

The Kansas City Chiefs have fired head coach Herm Edwards, bringing to an end a three-year tenure marked by the team getting progressively worse, and ending with a disastrous 2-14 campaign in 2008.
New general manager Scott Pioli was hired 10 days ago, and it has been widely assumed in NFL circles that he was planning on firing Edwards. This afternoon ESPN reported that the firing was handed down, and Pioli will be searching for a new head coach.
The question now is whether Pioli will focus on an up-and-coming assistant (like Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley) or try to make a big splash with a proven coach (former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and former Steelers coach Bill Cowher have both been mentioned).
Edwards went 15-34 in three seasons as the Chiefs' head coach. Edwards previously spent five seasons as the head coach of the Jets, compiling a 41-44 record.
UPDATE: The Chiefs are in talks with Mike Shanahan.

Herm is a CLASS ACT.
The Chiefs are so bad even he could not right that sinking team.
In Seaside Ca, every year Herm brings alot of ex players and hosts a football camp, NO CHARGE, to the kids from Monterey, Ca. area.
He is a honest and thoughtful man.
His next team WILL do well.
I hope the Patriots pick him up as a new offensive coordinator to replace ours who is now the coach of Denver.

He deserved to get fired. he ditched the Jets for what he thought was a winning team. He didnt want to build and earn a winning team, he just wanted to win. And it backfired. 5-4-3-2-1 oops i forgot the clock was running.

I am a 27 year Jets season ticket holder. In those 27 years I have seen some terrible coaches, (none worse than Rich Kotite). Edwards #1 priority was to be liked by his players.....that is always poison to a team.
Happy retirement Herm!

Isn't he is the second black coach fired this year? That should get everyone all excited. Maybe Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and the new president should get involved. Then Herm will get his job back and the team can fire a white guy just to make things... right. But, as far as football teams go, Herm has been the head coach for two lousy teams. Can't win with a lousy team.

Dude,
NO reason to play the race card. That's just ignorant and it's poison. Let's take a step forward and get past this kind of garbage. No time like the present, right Whataya say?
BTW, I hope the Chiefs don't get Shanahan or the Cards' OC either. I'd much rather have Marty back. I hope they keep OC Gailey and find a new HC with Defensive specialization and a great DC. Let's pick up free agents Haynesworth and/or Suggs and then bring on the draft! Go Chiefs!

Herm Edwards has no business being a head coach. He is all smoke and mirrors.Ever listen to one of his press conferences?, he is a joke.As a Jet fan he is also a liar and betrayer, shows no loyalty whatsoever.Good for the Chiefs,They got what they wanted and he ran the team into the ground.Im glad he left the Jets, now he got what he deserves.Hes been exposed as the jackass he really is and hopefully no team will ever trust him as their coach (except probably the Raiders)

I'm Glad!!!! Loved to see the Chiefs lose because of Herm. He bailed on the Jets because he didn't think them worthy of him. He sucks as a person and as a coach. Hey Coach Try High School Ball
