In the wake of Jon Gruden's somewhat surprising exit from Tampa Bay, there have been quite a few reactions from players and analysts across the league. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk cites a league source that claims several veteran players were fed up with Gruden being somewhat of a "turncoat," and telling guys one thing, and then going and doing the opposite. Wide receiver Michael Clayton, for example, offered up this comment, courtesy of the St. Petersburg Times:
"How do you build a championship team with all the inconsistency? You have to do it the right way. I've always been a person who feels like you reap what you sow. You have to treat people fairly.'' When asked what he wished Gruden would've done differently, Clayton said, "It's about showing more confidence in your players. He was kind of a turncoat. He'd tell you one thing and then do something else.''Some of the harshest criticism came from analysts Pete Prisco and Shaun King. Prisco offered up some scathing criticism of Gruden's revolving door at the quarterback position, which never really seemed to be settled this season.
"Jon Gruden never understood that it's the quarterbacks that drive NFL teams. And it cost him his job. Gruden was arrogant enough as a coach to think his schemes could overcome the lack of a quality quarterback."Ouch. Tampa Bay entered the season with Jeff Garcia as its starting quarterback, and after he struggled in the season opener -- and also suffered an injury, which seemed to be open to debate as to how serious it really was -- Gruden turned the job over to Brian Griese for four weeks. After Griese struggled in his four starts -- and also suffered an injury -- the job became Garcia's again as the Buccaneers roared out to a 9-3 start, entering a Monday night contest in Carolina in control of their own destiny for a division title.
And that's where things started to go wrong.
From that point on, the Buccaneers' rock-solid defense turned into a gaping hole of futility, as they dropped their final four games of the regular season, including a Week 17 game, at home, against Gruden's former team, the Oakland Raiders.
Shaun King, currently an analyst with ESPN and a former Tampa Bay quarterback, said he wasn't surprised by Gruden's firing, and that it may have come a year or two too late.
I agree that it isn't a surprise, but I'm not sure it's "a year or two too late," either. The timing actually seems just about right.
Gruden brought a championship to Tampa Bay, and while critics will say he did it with Tony Dungy's players, the bottom line is he did with those players what Dungy couldn't do -- win a Super Bowl. That's a tremendous accomplishment and something that can never, and will never, be taken away.
The problem, however, is that since that championship in 2002 the Buccaneers have been mired in mediocrity. It's a what have you done for me lately type of business, and lately, the results weren't there in Tampa Bay. Since that Super Bowl, the Buccaneers compiled a 45-51 record under Gruden, not including the 0-2 mark in the postseason. When you combine those records with the four-game collapse at the end of the 2008 season, well, it was simply time for a change.
While Clayton, King and Prisco were somewhat harsh in their feelings towards the former Bucs coach, some players spoke out in favor of Gruden, including veteran Derrick Brooks, who called in to a Tampa Bay radio station to voice his opinion.
Antonio Bryant, who also happens to be one of the team's biggest free agents heading into the offseason, said he was surprised by the firing and that it was like a "family atmosphere" where "everybody got along." That kind of contradicts the earlier comments from Clayton.
Gruden is a fine head coach, and I'm sure there are quite a few teams around the NFL that would love to hire him today, and sooner or later, somebody will. Tampa Bay simply needed a fresh start.

i guess when a television station takes a straw poll and it shows that at least 79% of those voting thought that Gruden and Allen should be fired, the money grubbing owners listen. Which at times is a good thing. Gruden had indeed grown STALE, with an offense that most times can not even score a touch down. It was time for him to GO! Good Luck To You Jon Gruden

I guess some of you weren't around when Gruden won the superbowl WITH Dungf's players and Oaklands playbook in his back pocket. He took a great team an dismantled it in a few short years and should have been fired long ago. Dungy wouldv'e gotten them to and won the superbowl had he been given time. After all, didn't Dungy win a superbowl in Indy. Gruden and anyone who like's him sucks!!!!

Gruden let some of our best players wither away. He never used Alstott the way he should have used him and he let Lynch go too. Gruden was way too egotistical for his own good. Bye bye and good riddance.

If cursing and scowling were the only thing you need to be a winner then Gruden would be undefeated. He has never built a team on his own to do anything. His act was getting old.adios Chucky at the end you were just that A made up phony with a stare

The mistake was made when they fired Dungy. They already had a great coach that had taken them to the NFC championship that year. Dungy and the bucs were so close to going to the superbowl. Gruden was a mistake. Look at both coaches winning and playoff records and it shows that Dungy was the better coach. If we wouldnt have been fired, he surely would have won the superbowl that year against raiders. Dont forget right after gruden left the raiders, they also made it to the superbowl. Gruden is not a good coach. He was just coaching the right team at the right time.

Subject Jon Gruden and the Buccaneers and the Glazers - the owners
Living in Tampa area and watching the Bucks it became very apparent after the Glazers (owners) spent 1.5 Billion on the English soccer team Manchester United - that they either didn't have the money to get quality talent here in Tampa, or didn't see the need to do so until the players decided to colapse this year.
The pluses on Gruden was he was great at taking other team's castoffs and remaking them into STARS at bargain basement prices.
On Michael Clayton - wherever he ends up - new team I hope - I only hope he can actually catch the ball next time - that guy kept dropping the passes all the time in key game changing critical moments - I would have kicked him to the curb 2 years ago.
Shaun King - was a decent quarterback - but was too small, and was sack prone, apparently Jon Gruden saw that and shipped him off somewhere else. Now he's a ESPN analyst you say?
With champaign tastes for wins - and apparently a beer barrel budget for players salaries it will be interesting to see if the new coach Morris can bring us a winner on the budget the Glazers give him to add talent.
One thing about Jon Gruden was he had a unique talent in finding guys and rejuvenating their careers. If he had the money to get the "beefy" line on offense and defense Tampa might be in the playoffs. If you want to blame someone - BLAME THE OWNERS.

Jon Gruden had way too much control in Tampa. The GM he hand picked to replace Rich McKay, Bruce Allen, was a Gruden puppet. Their evaluation of pro talent was very good. However, their evaluation of draft eligible college talent was the worst in the NFL. In the 7 years Gruden was in Tampa they have not had 1 star from the college draft. Gaines Adams is a good player but not the type player you use the 4th pick in the draft. He is not an impact player. Your first 2 round picks should be able to play immediately and make an impact, i.e. Adrian Peterson, Phillip Rivers. Gruden is not a bad coach, just an over-hyped average coach. By the way, Rich McKay as Pres. of the Falcons has turned a franchise around after losing their franchise player Michael Vick.

Morris if hired is being set up to fail... A black coach in cracker town with no head coaching or coordinator experience...yea...that is going to last. Add to that you have a 40 year old QB, 34 year old RB, no quality Wide-out. No depth, an small and aging defense who just lost their leader in Monte...and yet they are 42 million under the cap and don't bother to go after any quality free agents or even talk to other coach's like Rex Ryan? Um...yea...Raheem...do yourself a favor my friend...go west. He has a better chance of success in trying to get the Raiders job! Pretty sad that the Bucs job actually looks worse now than the Raiders job or the Jets...ok maybe not the Jets but just a few weeks ago the Bucs at least had hope for next year ...now...you may as well bring back the creamsicle uniforms for good.

Looks like Clayton drop another pass. He was a bust and was lucky that Gruden kept him around to try and improve. He never did improve and now he's blaming the coach.

Gruden didn't dismantle a great team. They got old and hung around past their prime. Alstott comes to mind. The fans would have revolted if Gruden would have cut him. They spent too much money on their defense and many times when enough points were scored, the didn't hold the lead late in the game to secure the victory.

I always love to here players backstab a coach they once had. Its always good to hear the loyalty the overpaid NFL players complain when really they needed to step up there game. Garcia for instance, a lot people have said oh well if it wasnt for garcias last minute heroics the season could have been worse, well where was he in the last 20secs of the raiders game? he was busy dancing in the pocket and then getting sacked. the bottom line is that the players needed to step up too.

I agree that Gruden's time in Tampa was up. He lost control & respect of players. On the other hand the Glazer are out of their minds hiring Raheem Morris. He inexperienced guy and never been head guy anywhere. He as in charge of Bucs defense basically last four games after Kiffin announced he was leaving. That did not work out last check defense went into tank under his watch the last four games now he is head guy. WOW. The Glazers should have went & got someone that had some experience. Mike Shanhannon is avaiable & is great coach as well can bring a young quaterback up & devolp him. Look forward to 4-12 season next year.
