Julius Peppers Officially Alerts Panthers That He 'Needs a Change,' Wants Out

Julius Peppers has, since drafted by the Carolina Panthers as the second overall pick in 2002, been the face of the organization on many fronts. But following the end of the Panthers' season, he made some comments which, at the time, made it appear as if he was fully prepared to move on from Charlotte and would prefer not to be franchised by the organization.

However, there was certainly no official indication that Peppers wanted to play elsewhere. At least until today, when his agent, Carl Carey, issued a statement to ESPN (bypassing the local media is certainly a subtle brush-off too, mind you) that informed the Panthers he has no interest whatsoever in remaining with the team.
"The front office has been informed of my desire to explore opportunities with other NFL teams following the expiration of my contract next month," Peppers said in a statement released to ESPN through his agent, Carl Carey. "At this point in my career, I am seeking new challenges that will allow me to grow, develop and reach my personal potential on the football field.

"I strongly feel that making a move at this time is in my best interest. I appreciate the entire Panthers organization and am thankful for the seven seasons I've spent with the team."
It should be noted that the Panthers have attempted to re-sign Peppers over the past year, even after his absolutely embarrassing and horrid 2007 season. It should also be especially noted that the Panthers have the option of franchising Peppers with a one-year, $17 million contract.

And much of the reason for Peppers' statement probably revolves around that second fact; the Panthers don't actually have to negotiate with him at all and can keep him in Charlotte, effectively minimizing the number of years he can leverage into a long term deal.

What can we expect from the Panthers then? A franchise tag anyway, but one that will result in a trade to another franchise. Peppers was a Pro-Bowler this year and still has some good years in front of him, especially if he's able to land in a 3-4 defense (where he thinks he'll be more successful). But thinking the Panthers will just let him walk is probably a little silly, especially considering the way he's treated the franchise over the past year or so.
