Jimmy Johnson Doesn't Think T.O. Is Still a Great Player; Giants and Jets Beware

Somehow, no matter the topic, the conversation always comes back to Terrell Owens. Yesterday, the Cowboys canned defensive coordinator Brian Stewart for Wade Phillips' and Jason Garrett's failings, and today, we're talking about ... T.O. Naturally.

During a Saturday radio interview, former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson said that Owens "... used to be an outstanding player, a great player ... He is still a good player, but you have to weigh the distractions and whether or not he divides the locker room and the problems that he has."

Johnson probably didn't just show up and start popping off about Owens; I'm sure the interviewer posed the question, particularly given the recent speculation that T.O. might be released. Whatever, I agree: Owens -- Patrick Crayton's glowing recommendation aside -- can be a locker room distraction.

Fair enough, but what's the bigger issue: T.O.'s ranting and raving or the fact that the coaching staff managed to just win nine games with the league's most explosive offense? Owner Jerry Jones could decide to get rid of everybody (and hope that the Rams take Garrett off his hands) and start over, but that doesn't seem to be his nature.

So for now, Dallas is stuck with a head coach in name only, an offensive coordinator coming off a bad season, and a wide receiver who needs a lot of coddling.

For shiggles, let's assume Jones cuts Owens, then what? Well, like Jon Gruden, it sounds like he shouldn't expect to end up in New York. At least according to the Daily News' Gary Myers, even though the Giant and Jets could use a big-play wide receiver.
The Jets will have absolutely no interest if Owens is let go. They are focusing on hiring a coach - Rex Ryan could be announced next week if the Ravens lose on Sunday - and figuring out their quarterback situation.

The Giants investigate everything and never take anything for granted and thus never rule anything out, but can you ever see Tom Coughlin signing off on the Giants bringing in Owens? Not a chance, especially after what he's been through with Burress. If the Giants suddenly feel desperate, perhaps Coughlin can just call his buddy Bill Parcells to find out just how difficult life with Owens is.
Which means that Bill Belichick will sign Owens, trot him out there with Randy Moss, Wes Welker, and the newly rebuilt (and dreamier!) Tom Brady, and get down to the business of pummeling whoever happens to be next on the schedule.
