Back in October, after the Cowboys had dropped games to the Cardinals and Rams, and lost Tony Romo for four weeks in the process, head coach Wade Phillips commandeered the play-calling duties from defensive coordinator Brian Stewart. Coincidence or not, Dallas' defense improved -- at least until the final two weeks of the season, when they disappeared for long stretches in the games that ultimately sealed their fate as January coach potatoes. And Friday, to prove that Jerry Jones means business ... about something, the club fired Stewart.
After a disappointing 9-7 finish, Phillips said there would be changes, and in addition to sending special teams coach Bruce Read on his way, he apparently feels that canning Stewart makes the Cowboys a better team. The Dallas Morning News' Brian Davis makes a keen point, however:
What fans never grasped was that this was the Wade Phillips 3-4 defense, not Brian Stewart's. Anyone who directed their venom at Stewart always should have been aiming higher. That being said, you have to wonder if Phillips was forced to dump Stewart in order to save himself.Terrell Owens would like to point out that this wasn't his fault. Whatever, if Phillips is having to fire coordinators to save his job, he's probably not long for Dallas. Which is exactly what most people thought prior to the news that Stewart had been scapegoated.

Thanks, Cowboys. It's been a great forty years for me, but I can't root for a team that fires people as scapegoats, rather than job performance.
Wade Phillips has no more sayso with this team than the Campos or Ganleys that preceded him. I've been holding my nose since Jimmy Johnson left. No longer.
The Eagles, Giants and 'Skins just became three of my favorite teams. There are going to be a lot of empty seats in that obscene stadium in Arlington.

The Cowboys only had 10 losing seasons in Texas Stadium, but 7 of them have been during Jerry's 19 years. I've been a fan since 1969, but it's getting harder. Good luck in the Jerry Dome. Don't look for any heroics there. Not as long as the little troll with the bad facelift is running the show. Thanks Tex and Coach Landry for all the memories.

I love the
cowboys. I for one will continue to watch them play. They have a great team but hard luck comes about at and for any team. Maybe next year might be the year...I hope so. Go Cowboys

Listen, I am a Cowboy fan for life, but we need a leader in the hundle, Toni Romo needs to know that he has to work for his job. He looks behind him and see Brad Johnson, before real. I didn't like T.O. either when he first came to Dallas but he is a great ball player who makes things happen when he gets the ball, Romo is no leader. Troy was a leader and took control of his team, and no matter what happened through the week on their team, they played Cowboy football on Sunday. Wade Phillips is a joke, Romo is a joke! We need a coach who kicks ass, hey John Gruden now that a coach, don't fault T.O. & Roy Williams blame the guy who was to busy smiling all the time instead of taking control. While we are at changing the defense get some guys in the secondary who don't get burn like toast every game. The names Newman and Henry are always captured behind the receiver who caught another touch down and then next week they are on the injured reserved. Give them season tickets to just quit.

You know...I love the Cowboys but if yo ask me who our greatest rivalry is I will say The Cowboys. They truley are a love'em or hate'em team. What other team gets mor recognition in the world more than the Cowboys. With that said, why not be a tight fit dynasty like a New york yankees or a New England Patriots or LA Lakers..........I hate all those teams but they prove year after year that they can be or are like champions like the past teams that were. How do you go from being picked by everyone to go and win a superbowl this year to being the laughing stock of all majors. It has to start w/ the coach or coaches. No.......... it has to start with Jerry Jones taking a step back and letting A Coach Be A COACH! Isn't why you hire someone.... not to see them fail because there scared of what happens if they do.but to succeed and Jerry Jones and Al Davis don't wanna grasp this concept it's all about winning like they did before. When Troy first came in we were terrible but with a strong willed head coach we became the best. It wasn't till JJ stepped on a couple of toes was when Jimmy said that's enough. He was ready to give his "how bout dem Cowboys" speach way before he did but here's JJ bringing in the Sheik of Egypt of wherever and ruining his coaching spotlight. All owners should get the "F" out of the way and let these guys coach. If they run your industry into the dirt get them the "f" outta there and if you feel like you're GOD Almighty than you coach, otherwise shut you hole Wang Chung cause you haven't done anything yet but hire a bunch of thugs in the past 4 years.Who's next,Plax..Vick.I wouldn't doubt it

I HAVE BEEN A DIE HARD FAN FOR 43 YEARS. SINCE JJ HAS BEEN THE OWNER THEY HAVE NOT FAIRED WELL. LANDRY IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE. PHILLIPS NEEDS TO GO AS WELL AS ALL THE GLORY SEEKERS. THERE IS NO I IN TEAM. THERE ARE FAR TO MANY HOT DOGGERS. GET RID OF THE THUGS, PUT THE OWNER ON A LEASH, THEY NEED A COACH THAT WILL STAND NOSE TO NOSE WITH JJ. THE DALLAS COWBOYS ARE BECOMING A LAUGHING STOCK OF THE NFL. IF ONE GETS IN TROUBLE "THUGGIN", JUST CALL JJ HE WILL LET YOU ON HIS TEAM. I HOPE JONES AND THE COWBOYS "WAKE UP"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

looks like u cowboy fans are starting to realize what i've been saying for 14 years...jerry "the moron" jones is your problem...you cant cut him, trade him, or force him into retirement....as long as "the moron" is running the show, yall aint getting any closer than last year...i feel for u guys,(the fans that is)but how many other nfl owners can u recognize on the street?...."the moron" loves the spotlite. he also thinks he knows what he's doing.parcells built this team, "the moron" is tearing it apart. "the moron" signed TO, n parcells bolted soon after. now "the moron" will be back 2 trading up in the draft 2 get the next quincy carter.

Ryan,
For starters, Stewart was not "scapegoated". The fans were calling for his "head" for months after the horrible production of our defense. After Phillips took over, all was much better!!!
Stewart had months to learn the scheme, and obviously did not. Wade Phillips will be our coach again next year, as JJ has reiterated over and over, barring anything unforseen. So, what is up with the questionable title of this article? Have you talked with Coach Phillips to know he is relieved? Or, could it have been very difficult for him to relieve someone of their duties who had not performed well???

Ryan,
BTW, lay off TO!!! If our players (excluding Dware, Witten, & Ratliff) had the passion and fire in their guts to win like TO does, we would not be "couch potatoes" watching the play-offs!!!
I would greatly appreciate it, and once again, do go to Journalism school!!!!!

I was pulling for Brian to stay and improve with the experience of longevity in attacking the mistakes of the previous year. Looks like Jerry at it again, micro-managing the situation not giving time to heal old wounds keeping them fresh and hurtful. I hope Brian get's past this in a quick fashion and go on to be a great coach in the future. I as a fan want to say thanks Brian don't let this hold you back.

Jerry Jones has to deal with his mistakes the same way he deals with the coaches mistakes and that is he must come to realise that he must fire his own self as G.M. HE TRUELY SUCKS AT THIS POSITION.Hey jerry get a guy that knows football and give us our winning tradition back.

"BTW, lay off TO.....etc" You're "right on". Contrary to what some of the big names in coaching say, emotion does win games. And,once in a while, even our stone-faced 'boys show it. I guess it all boils down to the sad fact that these very intelligent men are tired of playing and working under a mismanaged system fostered by JJ, the walking God.
