The LaDainian Tomlinson saga in San Diego is quickly becoming one of the more prevelant themes of an NFL offseason ... that hasn't even begun yet.But we are talking about LdT, and when someone of his stature is suddenly rumored to be on the trade block, only to ignore said trade rumors -- which comes just before the team and the San Diego media further the notion that he might have played his last game with the Chargers, well, it becomes kind of a big deal.
Tomlinson has, since the latest reports that Ryan mentioned Wednesday, changed his stance too. He's no longer pretending to not hear people talking; now he's calling the rumors "ridiculous."
"I think it's ridiculous to be talking about trade and me not being here, that's just my personal opinion. I know every team has a right to make trades and all this stuff, but I just think it's ridiculous to be talking about this, to have this stuff in the media when this could be handled behind closed doors and in a professional way. Now I have people calling me, talking about this all the time; this has become a big story and I don't want this."That seems like a pretty valid approach for a lock-job Hall of Famer, no? But A.J. Smith also has a pretty solid point as well: this is football, and talking about trading a player is never ridiculous.
"[Discussing Tomlinson's future] may be stunning to people, but as the GM here -- where I told you I would pass his name a few years ago -- it will be discussed heavily. I think it's valid; I don't think it's ridiculous. I think it's important at this point in time, as unreasonable as that may sound to many people or to you, I think it's a sound football decision."
Smith has to say that. Coming out and telling anyone/everyone that Tomlinson "won't be traded" is silly, irrational and patently false. Everyone is available for trade if the price is right. For his part, LdT also told SI that Norv Turner confirmed the silliness of the rumors and that owner Dean Spanos made it appear as if his return was certain.
And maybe it is -- the Chargers aren't going to get the type of draft pick in return that would land them a future stud and Darren Sproles, in both the opinion of Smith and me, is not an every down type of back. But that doesn't mean they can't at least talk to people about what they could get for Tomlinson.

Charger fan here. LT is a bust? Top 5 running back of all time and he is a bust? You are a moron. Now, if the Chargers can get a second round pick for him at this age... take it. LT is injury prone as all backs are when they hit 30. But LT being called a bust is like saying Michael Jordan sucks..

As much as I admire LT for his football plays and his quiet private life, I do have to say that he is hurt quite a lot and shots of him sitiing on the bench doesn't help the Chargers. I think he has run out of gas and his body punished to the extreme. I hope he isn't traded but how long can you keep a player constantly injured, on the payroll? He get paid big money but I doubt if any other team can match his salary.

LT has had a couple of tough years with injuries. Too bad he was only able to set TD records and only rush for 1000 + yards each year. I think it's the ultimate stupidity to trade him to another team and have him run all over everybody for 2 to 4 more years. Give him another year and watch him blow everybody away.

LdT should feel flattered. Talk of trading him only indicates that he has value. The NFL is a business and the Players are Assets. You are only as good as what another team will pay for you and he is pretty damn good! It all goes back to Needs vs Wants. LdT has Skills and nobody can deny that!

I have two ideas. One....LT should restructure his contract and take a much lower salary and then charge San Diego by the yard earned. as an example, $3M per year and $4,000 per yard run.
Two... Get rid of Norv Turner and AJ and get Shanahan becuase he does know how to win games and handle stars. Norv will never get them there and AJ has to go as he supports him. This plan would allow him to control the stars and maybe even keep all concerned.

How is Norv the problem? They were second highest scoring offense even though the didn't have a TE, health RB or one good WR all season. That's amazing.
Blame the defense on Norv? Well that doesn't make sense as he had to take AJ's buddy Cottrell and stick with AJ's lousy signings. What sort of a tool signs a no-name like Stephen Cooper or Tucker to a long term deal? Who trades away picks for a scrub safety like Weddle? Castillo got a big contract and had how many sacks? 1.5. He had 2.5 in 07 yet Brilliant AJ signed him longterm. Why? What does Genius AJ see in these lousy offensive (Buster Davis, Chambers, Jackson, Hester, Tolbert) and defensive players?
But blame Norv. Yeah, he's the problem. He only led a prolific offense in SPITE of the LACK OF TALENT.

Teams with super star RBs win super bowls how often lately? When was the last one? Terrell Davis? Faulk? That's quite a long time ago.
In today's NFL you need parity in your run and pass and quality on your defensive side. The Chargers lack in quality at D-Line (both ends suck!), linebacker (no inside linebacker since Edwards split) and safety (Hart and Weddle couldn't cover Shannon sharpe today!).
As for offense, they have a great QB, great line and one hobbled TE, one fat TE and no WRs. At RB they have a washed up old man sucking down cap space and demanding carries (along with his vocal fanbase).
Everybody says AJ Smith is so studly with the draft. Really? How's Buster Davis working out? Hester was a great pick - he plays FB now. Brandon Siler? Jyles Tucker? Weddle? Really, this AJ Smith is a great judge of talent? So he traded a 2nd rounder in 2007 for Chris Chambers who was MIA all season. How about that Vince Jackson - it took him 4 years to break 1000 receiving yards - I bet he'd catch a vodka on the rocks if you threw it 30 yards downfield...
