I almost feel just as guilty as the mainstream media at times like this. Brett Favre speaks, and I immediately start writing about it.
The only difference is my disdain for Favre. The guy is basically the 3-D version of the saying, "from the penthouse to the outhouse" and things don't seem to be getting any better.
After Thomas Jones ripped Favre for all those turnovers and Bill Cowher was reportedly worried about working with Favre as his quarterback, the Uncertain One has finally decided to talk, this time to the Biloxi Sun Herald.
The only one you let down was yourself? Not your teammates or the millions of Jets fans or even that guy that sits on that other guy's shoulders and screams the letters to your team while the stadium joins in? I mean, we all know Favre is more selfish than a two-year-old with his toys, but come on, you let a lot of other people down too.''As for as Thomas, I have not seen the comments,'' Favre said. "To be honest, I am not worried about the comments, either. Was Thomas backed into a corner or in a bad mood when he said those things? I don't know, but ripping Thomas is not my nature.
"The bottom line is I didn't play well in the final five games. It starts with me and it should. I am not ripping Thomas because that is not my nature. My expectations of myself are high and the only one that I let down was myself.''
He didn't stop there. As many have pointed out, the biggest problem with Favre missing the playoffs is that the retirement questions can now start even earlier. The situation in New York seemed nearly as stable as a "Real World" episode, so it doesn't seem like he is the right fit there. With the 39-year-old nearly 3,000 miles past his next scheduled oil change, has he decided if he'll hang up the cleats for good? Ha. You really thought it would be that simple?
As far as retiring or returning, Favre was direct.Could you answer a question more speculatively? I guess he could have said, "I might retire. I might play. Check it out next week on "Scooby Doo".
"I feel the same way as last year,'' he said. "I will take some time and make my decision. I do know that I enjoy being at home.''
The playoffs continue in two days, meaning we get real football back on the agenda. But the lingering idea of Favre coming back will hang over the NFL until he makes a real final announcement. I just know that if tears come out this time, I won't be one of those running from the cry of "Wolf!"

Shane, do you just like bashing people who have accomplished more then you ever could in life. Seriously the guy has played the game a long time. He's done it without getting arrested, caught with drugs, or with some teenage girl. So what he is OLD. He is in better shape then 95% of America. If the guy wants to play he has earned that right. Give the guy some respect. His receivers and o-line played like crap the last 5 games too but I don't see you writing that in your story. He's not perfect but he still is one hell of a QB and I would still pay to see him on the field over Tony Romo any day!

Brian, I am in total agreement with you except for your comment about Tony Romo, being that I am a fanatical Cowboys fan ;)
Shane, you are so cynical, as I have stated in the past.....please go to Journalism school for the good of AOL sports writers.
You could not carry Brett's----well you know that saying ;)
He is awesome and no doubt, a first year eligibility Hall of Famer!!! If he cannot leave the game now, then he should play on until he is ready. Oh, and by the way, I am sure he reads your tacky article and takes it under advisement LOL
Happy New Year,
Brenda (for Brett AND the 'Boys through good & bad )

Shane are you as braindead as Brett Farve?
This is the friggin NFL not High School. It's all about what can you do for me TODAY and TOMARROW!!!! Get it.
Theese guys get paid boatloads of cash to to WIN, not throuugh interception after interception. Even Donnavan McNabb figured that out(at least til he gets to his next contract) may you can get it too. Take a cold shower, and get the stars out of your eyes. BTW Farve is married

Depends on your definition of drugs. If it includes, umm, drugs... then you're wrong. Just because he didn't do crack doesn't mean the man's a saint. He's dealt with substance abuse - narcotics and alcohol.
Even as a Bear's fan, I liked him until this unretirement debacle but mostly because he was a real guy who liked to play football and made himself a pretty good player.

Are you kidding me? Farve is one of the most over rated quarterbacks of all time. He won one Super Bowl and when he won those NFC championships, the NFC was down. He might have set the career touchdown and passing yards records, but most any QB would after being in the league 18 seasons. What does it say when you are the NFL leader in Interceptions? It says you make stupid decisions and any other QB would have been benched. If Favre wouldn't have had a decent year last year, everyone would have been on the band wagon like they were a few years ago saying he needs to retire. And if the O-line was THAT bad, why did Thomas Jones have such big games?

Was Dan Marino a Great QB? He is in the HOF.
How many Super Bowls did he win?
The answer is none.
You can find numerous QBs in the HOF who have only
one Super Bowl win or None.
Super Bowls are not the only thing that makes a person great.

A lot of quarterbacks throw interceptions and not all of them result in points for the other team. Just last week, in one game, how many interceptions did Chad Pennington throw" How about Tony Romo's interceptions this season. Yesterday, Jake DeLomme threw his share? Why is it only the QB that wins or loses a game? There are 11 players on each team and some do not play their positions well at given time. Isn't football a team sport? Why do you only criticize the QB???

Favre fans are still in denial. When your defense for Brett "me first" Favre, is what kind of shape he's in for a 39 year old, and that he doesn't do drugs or rape teenage girls, you are ignoring the facts of the article.Brett has an ego problem that has destroyed his last 2 teams.I can't put it any simpler than that for you.

Destroyed the last two teams?
What was the Packers record a year ago compared to this year?
What was the Jets record a year ago compared to this year?
They were both better teams with him than without him.
I know he is not the only player on the team. However,
stats dont lie.

Mr G
Can you please explain how he "destroyed" his last 2 teams?? Before he got to Green Bay, they were a no winning "tundra" team that no one was interested in. He gets there and helps make them one of the winningnest franchises in NFL history. Not to mention all the $$$ he has made for that franchise - like it or not, he's a likable guy and people buy is stuff, so both Jets and Green Bay make a FORTUNE off the sales of his stuff. BTW - that's why Green Bay wants the marketing deal - not because they want to protect his legacy, but because the marketing deal calls for Green Bay to get exclusive rights to the sale of all Favre merchandise - they know they'll make a mint on that. As for all you folks who call Favre selfish - how the hell would you know??? Have you ever met the guy? Had a conversation with the guy??? I love how everyone makes these character statements as though they know the person they're talking about. And also, for you all you folks that call Favre a "media hound" - if you Google his name, there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 135 - 250 articles written about him a day - despite the fact that he hasn't held a press conference or directly contacted any of these media outlets himself. Just like Green Bay, who wants exclusive rights to sell his merchandise - all these a-hole media guys write articles because they know Favre's name is a draw and that it sells papers/mags - nice how they bite the very hand that's helping sell their rags. Oh yeah, and at 39, he's such a shitty QB that he's ranked 11th in the NFL overall for the regular season. That means there are 21 other QBs who are worse than him right now - all the while being a lot younger and a lot less banged up than him after all his consecutive starts. Philips Rivers - the new comeback darling of the post-season has only 4 fewer interceptions than Favre. Drew Brees - who almost broke Marino's single season passing yards record this season - has only 3 fewer interceptions than Favre. Let's do a pile up on them........Favre's problem isn't that he's a prima donna - it's that he's too honest and doesn't filter what he says to the press - and believe me, they take advantage of it. At the end, you want to know who destroyed the Jets this year???? Mangini. Any idiot coach who decides to punt instead of going for a second field goal that his kicker could clearly make (Seattle game) and who goes for a field goal instead of going for it on one and goal on the very first possession of the game (again, Seattle game) doesn't have the cohonos to be a head coach in the NFL - we'll just see when Cleveland makes their big comeback next year - Bill Parcells he ain't.

Favre's so stupid that he spews the same speech every year, and worse, his aloof attitude regarding his shoulder won't help it heal, though having it repaired now might give him a chance to play in a mini-camp. It might heal on its own, though either case requires some rehab, but the only certain one to make him ready to play is the surgical option. That would however, require that Favre become a team player, instead of a graying trailer-trash hick with no sense.

Yeah, Favre sucks. All he cares about is himself so he would continue to poision any team he was on. I hope it doesn't come to that. Let the tears be real this time and let him move on to announcing or owning car dealerships...he likes being home after all.

Brett Favre may be the NFL leader in interceptions and yea he has played for 18 seasons but what other QB ave you have seen that had the ability to stay that long? not none so dont go bashing on the fact that any QB could carry the career tuchdown record if they were there that long because I dont see any QB being able to make it that long. Hes one hell of a QB and you all just need to get over it if you think otherwise.

I'm sure the pain relievers that he was addicted to earlier in his career helped his longevity a bit.
I, for one, think that he had a average overall year this year. Kinda choked at the end, but began pretty well.
My hope is that he rides his John Deere off into the sunset and we can close this chapter on a bit overrated, but successful NFL quarterback.

I'm sorry...but you will find it hard to convince me (and probably others) that Brett Favre is the only guy that can Quarterback for 18 seasons. By the looks of this past year he should have left after 17.
