The Patriots haven't yet confirmed the report that they'll franchise Matt Cassel but that doesn't mean it won't happen, particularly if Tom Brady's recovery is truly behind schedule.
And while the organization has a history of treating personnel information -- no matter how mundane -- like it's a matter of national security, CBS analyst and sweater vest aficionado Phil Simms is absolutely certain New England will slap Cassel with the franchise tag. He heard it from his favorite source: Phil Simms.
He does admit, however, that the former USC backup to the backup has benefited from playing in the Pats' offense, although that doesn't mean he's not a legitimate starting quarterback.
He opened up a lot of people's eyes across the league, and I know he has an offense and they did a good job and all that, but I think you always separate the quarterback from the team. Matt Cassel is big, strong, athletic, knows when to run with the football now, and oh, he can really throw it. Can you name anybody coming out in the draft that fills that bill? That's a solid point, and one the Patriots will undoubtedly raise if they try to trade Cassel this offseason. The Lions, Vikings, Bucs and Jets are four teams, off the top of my head, who could be looking for a long-term franchise quarterback. And, save, maybe Detroit -- who are No. 1 at something ... the 2009 first-overall draft pick -- one could make an argument for sending a first-rounder New England's way for Cassel.
Now, assuming Brady won't be ready to start the '09 season, I don't think a trade will happen, but for the sake of argument, let's say it does. Here's something to consider (via the Boston Globe's Mike Reiss):
[Cassel] deserves whatever comes his way, but at the same time he also benefited from having some terrific yards-after-catch players in Wes Welker, Kevin Faulk and Randy Moss around him. Approximately 55 percent of the team's passing yards came after the catch, which was a league high.To answer the last two questions: no and no. None of the teams listed above have anywhere near the offensive firepower of the Patriots, but that doesn't mean Cassel can't be successful in, say, Tampa or New York. Just that it's probably important to temper the expectations. Even though he might occasionally look like Brady in the pocket, he most certainly is not.
So if a team is going to trade for Cassel, I think it must ask itself some important questions: Do we have a similar system and talent? And is Cassel indeed a proven option without those parts around him (e.g. Tom Brady in 2006)?
Again, that's not a knock; just stating what should be obvious: there's a huge difference between arguably the best quarterback in the league this decade and a guy who had an above-average season throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker.
I suspect some team desperate for quarterback help will make the Patriots an attractive offer. I'm just not sure New England will be in a position to make a deal until they know more about Brady's knee.

So is the "55% of yards were after the catch" being used as a negative? As in, all he did was dump it off to these talented receivers and they made everything happen?
Or is it a positive? As in, he was accurate enough to hit his receivers in stride and let them run with it?
I can see the argument going either way without more information. A QB who throws a lot of screens will (hopefully) benefit a lot from YAC. But so will someone who accurately throws slants and other routes downfield. We've all seen the difference from a QB who hits his guys in stride to one who's just a bit off (think Warner in St. Louis before/after hand injury), and how an inaccurate QB can negate possible YAC on screens and such.

Trogdor,
You're right: the argument goes both ways. Anecdotally, the six or seven Pats games i watched, Cassel was very good at throwing Welker/Watson/Faulk screens, and hitting Moss in stride on quick slant patterns. He had more trouble with throws beyond 10 yards.
But again, that's just me possibly misremembering. Sounds like a job for Football Outsiders. Either way, you raise an important point.

Uh guys, you could also franchise Cassel and pump up the Brady is still hurt thing to get offers on a QB you would otherwise lose to free agency. Just like nobody will give up much fro Sproles but SD will probably hit him with the franchise tag so if someone does want him, they're gonna have to give up some picks.
Teams like the Lions are hurting for a QB. They don't need first rounders in NE but they do have a huge need for a RB, safety and LB. Likewise Minnesota is really hurting for a QB.

Well, Brady got his shot because Drew got hurt. Maybe he will be the odd man out this time. I don't see Cassel sitting on the bench behind Tom. Maybe we've seen the last snap to Brady. I'm sure the Pats could get what they want for him in a trade and keep the young guy.

cassel did very well for us but Brady is a proven elite QB. Cassel struggled against good defenses(he will get better) when Brady would have easily won the game. best of luck to cassel and I hope he cashes in but Brady isn't going anywhere if his knee is healthy. we would have had one maybe two loses this season with brady and sitting on top of the afc as usual. Cassel gets a big check and we get a couple great picks in the draft! win win!

yards after the catch...if this stat were not constantly suppressed by the media, most of the quarterbacks in the league would have much smaller contracts...i wish i had a job were i could hand a hundred dollar bill to a guy, he turns it into a thousand and i get full credit.wow.

That Randy Moss fella, as much as he's disdained by the media and constantly compared to Terrel Owens, is one of the best receivers in our generation. The #1 and #2 all-time best offenses in the NFl share one common link, they both had Randy playing WR. Throwing to Randy Moss automatically boosts your stats by 30%. Cunningham, B. Johnson, and Brady all had career years throwing to the 6-4 receiver. Even when he's not trying or has a down year, he makes the other WRs available by taking up double or triple overages.

New England should focus on their defense.Injuries and the age factor and of course the thrift spending in the free agency are now firing at their backs now.

I agree, the defense has aged and with the exception of Mayo the Patriots need a serious upgrade at linebacker, the Patriots seem to be a Cornerback factory, everytime it looks like a big name jumps ship to get that big contract (Law...Samuals...no matter that they still have to finish the contract they are on) they draft well and grow a new one...If Brady is healthy, trading Cassell for a first rounder is the smart thing to do...certainly will help re-building that D
